Wakefield Estate

"April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain."

- T. S. Eliot, The Waste Land

What was I thinking?  For those who read my column last month, I waxed a bit nostalgic about this past winter, going on about already missing the beauty of snow covered landscapes. Enough already! That was so last month! Like the daffodils and crocuses pushing up through the moist earth, I too want to stretch toward the sun and feel its warmth. Like nature around us, Spring is a time we change gears - this month, after a long hiatus, we begin our school visits and after school program, host a spring flower demo and a workshop on compact orchards.  Between now and the end of June, hundreds of children and adults will visit the estate to enjoy its beauty - we hope you are one of them!

Bring Spring Inside! - Simple Floral Decorations Demo

Wednesday, April 13: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

If you have had enough of this tough winter and are impatient for convincing signs that spring is here, join us for our spring floral decoration demonstration. Cedar Grove Gardens' extraordinary floral designer and buyer/merchandiser Lisa Ahern will show how to create simple but dazzling decorations to brighten up your home, doorway or holiday table using spring flowers, bulbs and kitchen garden plants. As an added bonus, Lisa will show how to set up a show-stopping terrarium and will offer advice about planting and arranging your own outdoor containers. Those attending will leave with lots of great ideas and have a chance to win a raffle of some items created during the session. The session will run from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. Space is limited so please pre-register by calling 617-333-0924. Suggested donation is $15.

Estate's Chickens on Display at Maple Sugar Days

This year's annual Maple Sugar Days at the DCR's Brookwood Farm had some extra attractions, including 3 of the Wakefield Estate's chickens and mobile coop! The estate and other members of the newly-formed Blue Hills Collaborative brought some element of their operation to share with the public. The Collaborative, whose members include many of the area's organizations, seeks to enhance the natural systems, public persception and use of the Blue Hill region through partnerships between organizations involved in education, conservation and environmental stewardship. Look for more information about the Blue Hill Collaborative in coming months. We hope that our united efforts lead to stronger public service and presence in the future.
