Wakefield Estate

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade."

- Charles Dickens

And now mud season! After such a cold and snowy winter, the vernal equinox and what lies beyond it cannot come soon enough, right? First ice, now soft mud - when will it end? And yet, though I too long for the warmer and brighter days of spring and the sight of daffodils pushing up through the earth, there is a part of me that wants to hang onto the remnants of winter

 - the season of deep blue skies against colorless landscapes; of dark trees outlined in snow. With only weeks now until the official arrival of spring, there's something about this winter, even with all its harshness and hardships, that I just loved and do not feel ready to leave. But the mud reminds me that the passing of the seasons is constant, and whether we are ready or not, change is upon us and embrace it we must!

Creating a Compact Orchard Workshop

Saturday, April 2: 9-11:00 am

Would you love to have your own orchard but think you don't have enough space? In last year's session we created a high-density orchard of 50 apple trees in just a 25x30 ft quadrangle on the estate! This year's session will cover the basics of creating this type of compact orchard in your own backyard. Even with a small space and good sun, you can expect high yields with little effort or cost with proper planning and set-up. Co-sponsored by the Arnold Arboretum. Suggested donation $15. Space is limited; pre-registration required. To register or for more information, call 617-333-0924

Registration Now Open for Estate's Unique Archaeology Program for High School Students

The Wakefield Estate's Summer Archaeology Institute is one of only a few programs in the country that is specifically designed to involve high school students in archaeology. Each two-week session offers students a hands-on introduction to the field of archaeology through participation in an actual excavation on site at the estate led by a Boston University archaelogist. To read about some of the past discoveries, check the news archive on our website.

Registration is now open for the two summer sessions:

  • Session I: June 20 - July 1
  • Session II: July 5-15

For more information or to receive an application, please call 617-333-0924.
