winter

"February, when the days of winter seem endless and no amount of wistful recollecting can bring back any air of summer."

- Shirley Jackson

Snow, snow, and more snow!  Over the past several weeks I have watched the snow bank outside my window grow to an impressive size.  At this rate, it should be twice as tall as me by mid-February.

Wondering how long it will be with us, we've begun a friendly wager here, guessing the date by which the snow bank will melt away and finally disappear. June 1 is my bet!

Snow or no snow, programs continue here at the Wakefield Estate during these winter months. Coming up next: if you've ever thought of raising chickens, you won't want to miss our 2nd annual workshop on raising backyard chickens on Saturday February 12. And snow or no snow, winter is a beautiful season to visit the estate - but if you do come, my advice is to bring your snow shoes or XC skis, at least until June 1!

Backyard Chickens Workshop - February 12; 9-11:00 am

Back by popular demand! Last year's Backyard Homesteading workshop on raising backyard chickens drew a standing room only crowd. This year's session, co-sponsored by Brookwood Community Farm, is designed for people who are interested in learning how to start a backyard chicken coop and grow healthy, productive chickens for years of enjoyment and fresh food. Suggested donation for the workshop is $10; space IS limited so please pre-register by calling 617-333-0924.

Mid-winter Evening Garden Tour Warms Visitors

Two dozen brave souls, ranging in age from 75 to seven months, enjoyed the Wakefield Estate's first Mid-winter Evening Garden Tour on Saturday, January 22. Several of the estate's older and most handsome trees were illuminated with uplighting providing a dramatic spectacle against the black night sky. Under the added light of the nearly full moon bouncing off the brilliant white snow, visitors strolled through the garden on paths the Wakefield staff had etched out of the deep snow with a snow blower. Before and after their walks, everyone congregated in the estate's Front Garden, where a fire pit was ablaze in the large stone bird bath offering a chance to warm up or toast a marshmallow or sausage.
