fall

Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile.

- William Cullen Bryant

Keeping with the theme of the changing seasons, here at the Wakefield Estate we have developed  somewhat of an annual rhythm when it comes to our programs and work projects

that closely reflect nature's dynamism. During autumn and into winter, our science and outdoor education program with elementary school children teaches students how to observe the changes taking place in the fields, woods and wetlands as plants and animals prepare for the long, dark months ahead.  And just like the squirrels gathering up acorns to store before the 'big freeze,' there's a quickened pace to our own work of caring for the estate and its buildings - painting projects are wrapped up, gutters are cleaned, firewood split and stacked, leaves -- the countless leaves! -- are raked, all done to be ready for the next phase of the seasonal cycle.  Like the squirrel - we not quite ready, but we're getting there!

BPS Students Get Back Out to Learn
Once again this Fall, hundreds of Boston Public School children are enjoying science-related field experiences at the Wakefield Estate. Transportation to the estate, funded by Boston Afterschool and Beyond's Get Out and Learn initiative, has enabled elementary students from Mattapan, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale and Hyde Park students to explore nature, visit the chickens, walk in the woods and plant bulbs. These students will return in the spring to "compare and contrast:" the changes they observe between autumn and spring.

3rd Annual Holiday Decoration Workshop - November 10

With the holidays quickly approaching, it's time for "Holiday Inspiration with Lisa", our annual holiday decoration workshop with Lisa Ahern, floral designer for Cedar Grove Gardens.  This year the workshop will take place on Wednesday, November 10th from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in the historic John Davenport farmhouse at 1493 Brush Hill Rd. in Milton. Ahern will demonstrate how to create beautiful and easy floral accents for the holiday home, emphasizing creative and fun ways to make your home and table "shine" during the holidays, including incorporating candles and other lighting in your decorations. Enjoy some light refreshments, mulled cider or a glass of wine by firelight while watching Lisa work her magic! All the arrangements created during the workshop will be raffled among those present at the end of the evening. Price for the workshop, which includes refreshments, is $20 per person. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call 617-333-0924.
