I always anticipate the change of the seasons - that in between time that signals movement and change -- and the transition from summer to autumn is a particularly exciting time of year. Not yet cold enough to want to stay indoors, and no longer too hot to want to stay out of the sun! The air is crisp and the colors vivid; I just want to be outside for the mere joy of being outside!
Through our work with urban schools, where so many kids have no access to wilderness, we have seen how important it is to bring children outside and into the woods -- to surround them with the sights, sounds and smells of nature -- as a tangible way to promote environmental literacy. Through direct contact with soil, trees, bugs and every part of the local ecosystem, children begin to learn of the incredibly diverse and complex web of life to which we are all connected.
Next week we are participating in the national "Take a Child Outside Week." We invite you to bring a child or youth to the Wakefield estate and explore the outdoors for the mere joy of being outdoors... Mark Smith, Executive Director

Take a Child Outside This Week!
The Wakefield Estate is proud to participate in this year's "Take A Child Outside Week," September 24-30. The initiative seeks to help children develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live, and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration.
During the after school hours from Monday-Thursday, September 27-30 (2:30-5:00 pm), the Wakefield Estate welcomes parents and children to explore the woods, orchard and gardens at the estate. While no formal activities will be scheduled, we hope parents will consider bringing their children out to take a walk in the woods, visit our chickens, look for frogs and crayfish in the pond, or keep your eyes open for evidence of the changing season.
For more information about visiting during "Take A Child Outside Week," visit our website at wakefieldtrust.org or call us at 617-333-0924. For more information about the initiative or the search for other activities in the area, visit the organization's website at www.takeachildoutside.org.
