"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."  ~Hans Christian Anderson
Because of the summer's busy schedule working outdoors, we've combined the two summer month's into this late summer newsletter.

How fast the summer flies by!!
Our interns have completed
their six week tenure with us. Despite excessive heat and drought to contend with, this year's crew was one of the most productive and enjoyable we've had. One of the most noticeable achievements of their interns is a new span of split rail fence along the lane. The fence will be something they can show off to their family decades from now. That's an amazing experience and powerful lesson- to build something that literally leaves an imprint for generations to come - just as Polly did for us, leaving this special place for us to enjoy.

A student from the Charles H. Taylor School, Mattapan meeting Frankie
RIP "Frankie" the Rooster (May '08-August '10)
On Monday, August 2nd, a coyote came onto the estate and killed Frankie and six of his hens. Frankie was especially dear to us; he was among the first group of chicks we hatched at the Pierce Middle School in Milton in May of 2008. He was extremely kind and gracious. He brought joy to literally hundreds of school children, allowing us to hold him with just one hand while the youngsters had the opportunity to touch his lovely comb, feathers and feet. He was a "gentle giant." He will be sorely missed!

2010 Interns leave an imprint
Despite the oppressive heat this summer, the Wakefield Estate's 2010 Interns have been hard at work on a wide array of projects at the property. First week of July, we welcomed 8 Landscape Interns, selected from applicants who are 16-20 year-old students in the greater Boston area. This year, our interns came from a broad spectrum of communities including students from Milton High School, Canton High School, Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter School, Boston Latin School, Boston Preparatory Charter Public School and the John D. O'Bryant School of Math & Science. This summer, they have been busy building a split rail fence, tending to the chickens, doing trail and grounds maintenance, clearing and weeding, and working on projects aimed at improving the growing environment of some of our most special trees. Due to the drought, more time than expected has been spent watering our newly planted high-density orchard, raised beds and other plantings, but we try to blend the heavy lifting with good, practical education and landscape training. The interns will be heading back to school in the fall or off to begin college.
