"What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade."

                                     ~ Gertrude Jekyll, On Gardening

THE SEGUE FROM SCHOOL YEAR TO SUMMER...

This month, we wrapped up several student-led research projects aimed at deepening our understanding of the history of the Wakefield Estate and its occupants over the centuries.  Students from a number or universities and colleges - including Boston University, Simmons College, Western Carolina State University, UMass Boston, and the Winterthur Museum -  worked on the various collections: textiles, furniture, paper documents, minerals, art, and books.  While we become more familiar with the place and the generations of people who have called it home, hardly a day passes without some new exciting discovery that adds to our knowledge and appreciation of its rich history.

School's Out for Summer
As the school year winds down, we are taking stock of the year's accomplishments, many of which relate to our educational programs. This year, the estate saw a vast increase in elementary school field experiences, thanks to funding from the GOAL network (Get Out And Learn). In the 2009-2010 school year, over 1000 Boston Public School students had Spring and Fall field experiences for a two full days of science-related activities. We partnered with a number of schools including the Charles Taylor School in Mattapan and the John F. Kennedy school in Jamaica Plain. The estate also hosted first graders from Milton's Tucker School and Saint Agatha's Parish and after school programs from Milton and Hyde Park's Grew School. To read a front page article in the Boston Bulletin about our program with the students from the Grew School, click here and we'll send you a pdf of it..

First Session of of Summer Archaelogy Sizzles
The 2010 Summer Archaeology Institute kicked off on June 4 with students from Boston, Newton and Norfolk. The students work side by side with graduate archaeology students from Boston University and receive instruction on archaeological methods through a hands-on dig experience. The goal of the project is to deepen our understanding of the site's history and its occupants through the discovery of underground objects and resources. At the beginning of the second week, the archaeologists and students discovered a waste deposit site that is rich with late 19th and early 20th century artifacts. One of the teachers for our program,  Boston University doctoral student Alex Keim, got some great press recently for his involvement in BU's archeological work on Dedham's Fairbanks House. The article, along with a short video are viewable here. There is still space available in the second session of our Summer Archeological Institute for High School Students which runs July 5-16. Farewell to Megan
This week we say good bye to Megan Percy, an intern from Western Carolina University. Megan has spent the last 10 weeks at the estate doing research on Mrs. Wakefield's historic textiles collection. Working under the guidance of Valarie Kinkade and Mary Lentz of Museum and Collector Resource, Megan inventoried and catalogued objects from the attic of the Isaac Davenport Mansion. Her first "discovery" was a doll collection from the early 20th century seen in this photo. Other "finds" have included Mrs. Wakefield's straw hat collection and surprisingly pristine furs. Megan will complete her graduate work this fall, receiving her Masters' degree in December.
