 Backyard Homesteading Workshop Series:
Creating Backyard Wildlife Habitat
Saturday, March 20, 9:00 am-11:00 am
The third session in our Backyard Homesteading series focuses on how to turn your backyard into a wildlife habitat, and transform your yard into an environmentally sound and sustainable greenspace. The session will cover the key elements needed to provide a "pollinator-friendly" habitat that attracts birds, bees and butterflies. We'll also discuss options like eliminating a portion of your lawn and utilizing aesthetically pleasing plants that double as food and cover for wildlife.
The Backyard Homesteading workshop series is for people who wish to turn their backyards into productive oases that can benefit nature and people. The series has included hands-on sessions on small scale fruit tree production and backyard chicken coops, and will continue in April and May with sessions on backyard beekeeping, and creating a compact backyard orchard. Space is limited; suggested donation $15. Pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, call 617-333-0924 or RSVP by email. Students Launch Phase II of Archive Project
Graduate student interns from Simmons College have returned to the estate to begin the second phase of an archiving project. Under the direction of Jeff Mifflin, our consulting archivist, two students will spend time this spring sifting and sorting through three hundred years of documents to add to the growing archives at the Wakefield Estate. The project entails culling and organizing relevant documents, photos, and objects that will hopefully contribute to ongoing research at the estate. The Wakefield Estate provides graduate level fellowships and internships to provide valuable hands-on training for students from local universities. |
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD FRIENDS If you are interested in getting more involved with our organization and are interested in gaining some special landscape maintenance skills and/or learning more about nature, we are beginning to organize a specialized volunteer corps. These select volunteers will receive orientation and training and will help direct volunteer work days and assist us in some of our educational programs. If you are interested in hearing more about this initiative, please call 617-333-0924 or email Erica Max. |
