Winter Solstice Greetings!

"From December to March, there are for many of us three gardens - the garden outdoors, the garden of pots and bowls in the house, and the garden of the mind's eye." - Katherine S. White

Tonight marks the longest night of the year -- when the darkness seems victorious, complete and impenetrable.  All of nature burrows down deep in this cold, silent season of darkness. It is a time for stillness and reflection...  And yet, with darkness all around us, we cannot refrain from speaking of light, of lengthening days, of resolutions and the anticipation of new life. In the darkness of the winter solstice, we yearn for light. It is coming!

Wakefield Estate launches its
Backyard Homesteading Workshop Series

Saturday, January 9, 9-11:30 am: Fruit Trees

The Wakefield Estate's winter workshop series kicks off its first session on Backyard Fruit Trees. This hands-on workshop will cover the four P's of growing fruit trees: purchasing, planting, pruning and providing. Participants will learn how to grow healthy, productive fruit trees for years of enjoyment, spring color and a healthier environment. The Backyard Homesteading workshop series is for people who wish to turn their backyards into productive oases that can benefit nature and people. Each workshop is a hands-on session covering a number of topics including small scale fruit tree production and care, backyard chicken coops,  beehives, gardening for wildlife habitat and more.   Cost for the workshop is $20; space is limited.  Pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, call 617-333-0924 or RSVP by email.
