"The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly changes from the summer cottons into its winter wools."
-Henry Beston, 20th century Massachusetts writer/naturalist |

The visiting students from Boston have reminded us that the Estate's rich landscape can provide exciting new experiences for every age. They will visit us twice this year, and are using all their senses to take in how fall impacts the landscape, picking up seeds and leaves, and observing the changes evident all around. Things we take for granted like the worms in the ground, frogs and crayfish in the pond, and tasting ripe dogwood fruit from our trees, are revelations for some of these youth - and a pleasure for us to provide. |

There is lots of learning taking place at the Wakefield Estate these days! The colder months have not slowed the pace of visits from schools, garden clubs and visitors. Even on the coldest of days, it warms one's heart to see children making seeing new things and making new discoveries!
Autumn is a terrific time to explore the Wakefield Estate and observe how plants, animals and insects prepare themselves for the cold, dark months ahead. Recent visits of children from a number of Milton and Boston schools have helped me see this landscape through a new lens, one of wonder and awe at the amazing capacity of nature to anticipate and prepare for what lies ahead.
Surely, we have a lot to learn from nature's teachers surrounding us... Mark Smith, Executive Director |

Wakefield Estate Partners with BPS Teachers and GOAL Network to Bring Students to Site
The Wakefield Estate is excited to have received support from the Boston Youth Environmental Network's pilot grant program, Get Out And Learn (GOAL) which helps fund Environmental Field Experiences for Boston Public Schools. GOAL seeks to catalyze partnerships between Boston-area organizations and Boston Public School teachers to plan field experiences that are in support of the BPS science curriculum. The Wakefield Estate has partnered with two schools, Charles Taylor School and John F. Kennedy school, whose science specialists are bringing several classes in conjunction with their science studies. Several other teachers are bringing classes from Roxbury, the South End, Roslindale and Dorchester. Students will visit this fall, and again in the spring, noting the impact of the different seasons on the environment. |
