Sweet September!
Even with the brisk fall wind prompting the growing season to wane, September ushers in an exciting time at the Estate. Students' return to the classroom also means their return to the property for field experiences. During the past three years, the Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust has built strong alliances with a number of area schools. We welcome the "end of the year" as it relates to the plants, and the "beginning of the year" as it relates to the schools. Several hundred grade school students will visit the property this year, exploring the pond, the stream, the woods, the orchard, and witnessing new sights like this bush-climbing Northern Water Snake and her young (see above - two babies at right).
My favorite times of year are at the changing of the seasons -- just when you have had enough of one season and anticipating the next.

The onset of autumn brings with it the excitement of what is coming -- beautiful fall foliage, crisp sunny days, and being on the lookout for the first snow flurries.  The dynamic interaction between the seasons and the landscape is a constant theme here at the Wakefield Estate, and one that is woven into the curriculum of our after school program for Milton schools.  Paying attention to and understanding the subtle and not so subtle changes taking place all around helps us to see the connection between our lives and the larger cycles of nature of which we are a part.

Wakefield Explorers - The Battle For Survival!
So you think Nature is all peaceful and serene?
The Wakefield Explorers are experiencing, exploring, and documenting the fight for life that's going on right here in our own backyard! Wakefield staff and Milton Public Schools are collaborating to bring this exciting science class to After School Enrichment through the Wakefield Explorers Program. Students take part in a challenging 12-week course that started in early September, learning how plants and animals use competition and adaptation to vie for resources.
