Summer Colors and Textures
There's nothing like a stroll through an apple orchard on a lazy summer afternoon to sooth the weary soul!  Visitors are welcome to walk through the gardens, orchards and woods of the Wakefield Estate each Thursday from 2-6pm.  Come and take a break from the fast-paced world and enjoy the natural beauty of the estate's grounds. It's not too late to catch Polly's vast collection of dogwoods in the peak of their splendor.
This summer, we are piloting a number of new educational and research programs.  One I am very excited about is our Summer Archaeology Institute -- a program designed as an introductory course for high school-age youth.  This month and next, under the direction of graduate students in archaeology from Boston University, the participants will carry our a real-life archaeological excavation on site.  We welcome visitors to come and observe the excavation in progress, as students unearth clues to the history of the Wakefield Estate.

Wakefield Estate and Landscape Institute Pilot Estate Management Horticultural Seminar

During the first week of June, the Wakefield Estate became a learning landscape for students from Harvard's Landscape Institute.  The collaborative program brought together some of the best known horticultural experts in the region to lead day-long tours and sessions, using the Wakefield Estate as a laboratory of horticultural delights and mysteries.  Alice Ingerson, Paul Rogers, Jack Alexander, Marty Mitchner, and Richard Schulhof were among the faculty who lectured and toured the property with the students.  The program generated lots of ideas from both students and faculty.  Based on the feedback from all involved, it was a huge success.
