Advance Care Planning Speakers wanted!

Wanted:
People interested in speaking in the community
about Advance Care Planning. Kokua Mau is getting more and more requests for presentations from community groups and we would like to expand the number of speakers we can send out to meet face-to-face.

We will train you and give you materials but you should have a good understanding of the topic and be comfortable talking to groups. If you are interested in helping, let Jeannette know.

Hospice News Network Available for Hawai'i!

Hospice News Network: A great opportunity to be better informed.

Hospice News Network, is a national e-newsletter that provides a summary of hospice, palliative and end-of-life care articles. The stories cover local, state and national issues and come from a variety of sources.

If you would be interested in getting this weekly newsletter, just let Jeannette know.  HMSA sponsors the Hawaii distribution so we are able to offer it free to interested people and organizations in Hawai'i.

The Stanford Letter Project

Here is a great new resource that turns around the conversations on care at the end of life.
The Stanford Letter Project found that 99.99% of doctors found it difficult to talk with their patients about advance care planning.  The Project encourages patients to take the initiative and write a letter to their doctors about their wishes and values.

On the website you can get a free template for the letter as well as watch a great You Tube video of older Filipino people in San Francisco talking about their letter writing process.  Please let Jeannette know your feedback if you use this resource as we would like to promote this widely in Hawaii.

The new book by Dr. Angelo Volandes

Congratulations to Dr. Volandes!

The book, The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-life Care, by Angelo Volandes has been released by Bloomsbury Press.  The book is a part memoir and part guide about how American medicine fails patients with serious illness and offers a better approach to improve how Americans live as well as possible for as long as possible.  You can order the book on Amazon .

Dr. Volandes is the driving force behind the ACP videos and many of you might have met him during his visits to Hawaii.

Best wishes,

Jeannette Koijane
