The Official Brewsletter of Appalachian Brewing Company
July 2015
The Craft Beer and Soda of Appalachian Brewing Company
Dear Friends,

With the month of July now well underway, the summer swelter is really beginning to settle in. While many of us will take vacations to escape briefly with family and friends, we also look for ways to make the most of this beautiful season here at home.

At Appalachian Brewing Company, we can help you with that! Whether it's stopping in for a cold pint or six-pack of your favorite craft beer and soda, or unwinding on our outdoor spaces, we've got you covered.

To complement your year-round favorite beers like
Mountain LagerHoppy Trails IPA and Aero-Head Bock, our brewers have also turned out some spectacular seasonal specialties recently like Hinterland Hefe Weizen and Mad Cameron Belgian Wit. But get these beers while you can, because they won't last long!

No matter what the temperature reads outside - it's always cool in our brewpubs! If you haven't checked it out for yourself yet, we've been receiving some great feedback on our new brewpub menu. As always, we try to keep things fresh with the seasons, and visitors are currently enjoying our new Bacon-Wrapped Poppers appetizer, and the gluten-free White Rocks Chicken entree - it's delicious!

Finally - we're really getting into the thick of beer festival season across central PA and beyond! In the next several weeks, look for ABC at festivals in Harrisburg, Erie, Adamstown and State College. PLUS - mark your calendars for our very own 18th Annual Capital City Beer Festival, happening on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at our Harrisburg brewpub. We're expecting 25 guest breweries for this world class craft beer gathering that also kicks off our Oktoberfest celebration. Check for ticket availability HERE -- and bring your friends!

Until next time, Cheers!

Get To Know: Justin Betzer
Our New General Manager

ABC Harrisburg is excited to welcome Justin Betzer to the team!

As our General Manager, Justin is responsible for the overall operation of our original Harrisburg brewpub, and he's bringing plenty of experience to the table, bar... or wherever you prefer to sit.

With two decades spent in the food service business, Justin has done everything from waiting tables and cooking on the line, to leading a team as Executive Chef and General Manager.

Justin grew up in nearby Selinsgrove, PA, but his passion for food and great service has taken him across the country - with stops in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Orlando.

A self-described 'foodie' - Justin is also gaining experience as a craft beer connoisseur.

"It's great to be back close to home," he says. "I've always wanted to learn the brewery side of the brewpub business, and ABC is a world class place to do that while still surrounding myself with incredible people who know food."

Justin's favorite ABC beer is Chocolate Avenue Stout.

Next time you see him around the brewpub, be sure to say hello.

Welcome aboard, Justin!

Renovations are Complete
We've updated our brewpub to better serve you

Guests to the brewpub should notice a few changes as they enter the front doors. We recently closed the restaurant for a few days in order to complete a renovation of our Host Desk area and Merchandise and Beer-to-Go room.

The new entrance area removes some clutter for our staff and guests waiting for a seat, and will eventually include some bench seating for added comfort for guests.

The new retail merchandise and Beer-to-Go room provides more organization to our stock of ABC apparel, gifts and cold 6-packs of craft beer and soda.

We appreciate everyone's patience while we made these changes - which are designed to serve you better every time you visit ABC!

July's Featured Show
Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
July 17 | 9PM | $15 advance, $18 day of show

Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills comes Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band playing a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone.

Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire - best know, this trio is a force to be reckoned with. The growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for his country home and family and an uncanny ability to breathe new life into old forms of music give them a pedigree many Americana acts would kill for and an ironclad work ethic keeps them on the road 250 dates a year, playing for the people with hurricane force.

Locked in with an audience, the band create their own community and welcome the crowd into it, transporting them away from their troubles to joyous release, the way great musicians have done for centuries. The Rev. J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and distant cousin Aaron "Cuz" Persinger are a living breathing embodiment of the traditions and hard work ethic native to their Brown County, Indiana home. Their latest album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle.

Chef's Recipe

Watermelon and Tomato Salad

From the kitchen of ABC Executive Chef Kyle Mason, we present this tasty and innovative dish you'll enjoy trying at home!

Watermelon and Tomato Salad

Ingredients:

¼ cup of champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar

3 tsp. granulated sugar

1 tsp. kosher salt

¼ tsp. of cayenne pepper

½ small red onion

4 lbs of seedless watermelon

4 ripe beefsteak tomatoes (about 1.5lbs), stemmed and cored

¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil

1 loosely packed cup of roughly torn basil leaves

1 loosed packed cup of roughly torn mint leaves

Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Whisk vinegar, sugar, salt and cayenne pepper together in a small bowl

Quarter and thinly slice onion and toss it in the vinegar mixture. Set aside to let rest until the onion softens and mellows, about 30 minutes

Remove rind for the watermelon, cut into 1" chunks and transfer into large bowl. Cut tomatoes into 1" chunks. Combine the tomatoes and the watermelon chunks. Pour in the onion-vinegar mixture along with oil and toss gently with your hands. Add basil and mint and again toss gently. Season the watermelon and tomato salad with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve salad at room temperature on its own or alongside grilled meats.
