Vol. 5, Issue: 2
March 2013

Greetings!

A glimpse of clear, blue sky. A shock of yellow from an early daffodil. A great presentation about downsizing. It's enough to inspire some people to start their spring cleaning!

More than 75 people joined us for our Live Efficiently: Less Stuff, More Freedom seminar last month, where presenter Eric Rovner shared some insights and helpful tips to help conquer clutter and do downsizing right. We've shared some tips below.

Are you seriously considering a move to Emerald Heights? This is the time to act! We're offering special pricing available on select, one-bedroom homes when you reserve by March 31.

Finally, our resident blogger Marilyn Farrell shares some parting thoughts in her final blog entry. After five years of sharing her story through this publication, she's moving on to a new chapter in her life.

Enjoy.

Living Efficiently: Less Stuff, More Freedom

Conquer your clutter with these tips from Benevia

Downsizing (or "rightsizing") is all about simplifying your surroundings and belongings, while keeping the things you need and cherish. Downsizing is not a one-time event; rather, it is a process that requires time to achieve a successful outcome.

The good news is that the process does not have to take over your life. With the right planning, it can be accomplished in a series of small steps.

The ultimate goal is to align your current living environment with your current lifestyle, rather than being burdened by living spaces and accumulated possessions that don't support your current needs and interests.

A few tips for successful downsizing:
  • Plan: Create a plan complete with achievable goals, timelines, and people involved. Plan the work, and work the plan!
  • Pace: Start early, dividing the work into achievable parts. Reward yourself along the way.
  • Start easy: Begin your process with belongings that have little or no financial, emotional or practical value to you.
  • Have fun: Downsizing can be liberating. It is a time to revisit memories, while making way for a new chapter in your life.
  • Get help: Benevia can coordinate a wide variety of screened service providers that can support your successful downsizing efforts. Whether you need in-person assistance with sorting and planning, have trash to be hauled, documents to be shredded, or items to be sold, a professional Benevia Transition Coordinator can help every step of the way!

Eric Rovner holds a master's degree from Cornell University and has worked in the retirement industry for more than 15 years. He co-founded Benevia in 2006 and takes great pride in the transition assistance his team provides to clients and their families.

Editor's Note

Thank you, Marilyn!

Thank you, Marilyn, for sharing so many inspiring words since you first joined our community five years ago. You have taught us a lot about the power of storytelling, and how helpful it is to hear from people who have been where we are heading. We wish you well in your continuing adventures. We know you have many more lessons to teach.

Here, in Connection, we will be following Marilyn's courageous lead and continuing to share resident stories over the coming months. "Everybody has a story," they say, and we hope to bring you many new perspectives to consider. Stay tuned!
