This month we kick off the holidays with our annual tree lighting ceremony, and resident blogger Marilyn Farrell reflects on holiday rituals and the memories they stir.

With the new year, many of us will resolve to get fit and healthy. At Emerald Heights, residents have never had a better opportunity. Discover how our new Fitness Center offers new opportunities and increased accessibility.

The best time of the year 

It started with the Tree Lighting. Every year, it is a big event when folks gather outside for the switch to be turned on to light our gorgeous tree at the entrance. For a month, the tree and main driveway will remain lighted especially for the holidays.

This inspired my to dig out my own holiday decorations, which always stir memories of holidays past. When I stroll through the corridors, I see that I'm not the only one here "decking the halls"!

Fitness Center offers new opportunities to get fit and healthy in the new year 

Since the new Fitness Center opened last summer, residents have been exploring and enjoying its new features. The Fitness Center staff is especially thrilled with the results!

"This space has been designed specifically for our needs," explains Director of Resident Services Ben Brock. "Our fitness classroom was purposefully built for fitness, with the proper floors, mirrors and safety rails."

As a result, residents have benefited from predictability in course offerings, increased monitoring and safety, and improved accessibility.

"We have been getting a lot of positive feedback on our pool too -- especially our zero-gravity entry ramp," adds Fitness Program Coordinator Kim Palka. "We had one resident who was able to get into the pool and walk after she hadn't walked in five years."

 

"She had been in a wheelchair, couldn't navigate the stairs and didn't want to deal with the lift," adds Brock. "So there she was, in the pool, walking around on her own... I get goosebumps just thinking about it."
