GALA Urgently Needs Your Support for Arts & Culture in Central New England!

We haGALA Color Logove been searching for the right place to call our home, and we have finally found it for YOU. A place where we can share our passion for all of the arts. The Winchendon History and Cultural Center purchased the house next door to their museum and has invited GALA to bring the talent of our membership to Winchendon at this location at 135 Front Street. Our office and Gift Shop will be in the main house, but there is also a carriage house on the property with a tall ceiling and large wooden barn beams. We will be renovating this carriage house to be used for art exhibits and other activities. Until this new space is ready, we will have use of a few rooms inside the main house. Besides art exhibits, we will offer classes, coffeehouses, music jams, poetry events, critiques and much more! We plan to continue holding our Annual Spring Show and other events in the Greater Gardner area. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with the Winchendon History and Cultural Center.

In order for our new Arts Gallery to be successful, we urgently need you to donate and volunteer.

Place: Image and Emotion
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

The Jaffrey Civic Center will host an upcoming photography and poetry exhibit, PLACE: Image and Emotion by Kathleen Williams beginning Monday, August 29th through Sept. 22. The exhibit will be held in the first floor Display Case gallery and there will be an Opening Reception on Friday, September 2, from 5 to 7 pm. According to Ms. Williams, "my introduction to serious photography came nearly forty years ago when I purchased a Pentax Spotmatic and started looking at life in a whole new way. For the past 25 years, my career in marketing and communication has allowed me to continue that exploration of photography and writing more deeply. I studied photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and professional writing at New England College. I have lived in Jaffrey for the past 15 years."

Artist's Statement

"There are many places, both natural and created, that inspire us for their beauty, magnitude, and complexity. For me, the connection to the physical environment often evokes a strong emotional response. I imagine that we all have our special places that resonate deeply in our memories. These places inspire us, energize us, and contribute to our sense of understanding and belonging in the world. For the past several years, I have been fascinated by the relationship between words and images and have explored ways to combine the two. In this selection of work, I looked for pieces that focused on emotions and their relation to place. In some cases, the words attempt to illuminate the image. In others, the image suggests an element present in the writing. Neither is expected to be a literal translation of the other, but to inform the other in subtle ways. Together, the words and images created a deeper understanding for me than either could have alone. My hope is that the examples here will allow visitors to experience their own association with emotion and place."    -Kathleen Williams

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday -Friday from 10 am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10-2. The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Milkweed and Tree Sparrow by Susan Bull Riley
The Jaffrey Civic Center is delighted to host a watercolor exhibit by Vermont artist, Susan Bull Riley. The exhibit will run from September 10th to October 8th and will be held in the first floor Auditorium Gallery. There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, September 10th from 5 to 7 pm. Susan lives in East Montpelier, less than an hour away from her South Burlington roots. Her subject matter ranges from delicate botanical watercolors to large oil landscapes. Her work has a classical feel to it and according to the artist is "perhaps a reflection of my training in music of earlier centuries. Art has also led me to collaborate with a number of institutions that seek to protect the natural world" which she considers her "primary muse".  A graduate from Dartmouth College with a degree in music, Susan subsequently earned a masters degree in flute performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. Susan's work in the realm of natural history has received honors in galleries and institutions where there is national and international representation; it has been used by organizations such as The New York State Museum, The National Science Foundation, the Vermont Community Foundation, the American Chestnut Foundation, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and local land trusts.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday -Friday from 10 am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10-2.
