En Plein Air with GALA

Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, 10 am to 1 pm (Rain date: Sept. 27, 2014)
The final 2014 meeting of "En Plein Air with GALA" will be Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10 am at Doane's Falls in Royalston, MA. Come and join your fellow artists for painting, drawing, photography, or any portable medium in the fresh air. In the event of rain we will try again on Sept. 27.
What will you need? Anything that will help you create art outside of your studio. The hope is for a couple of hours capturing the scenery as only artists can, then convening for a gathering afterwards to gain perspective on the day's results.

Communities now gather annually as musicians from all over the world perform on stages, street corners, schools, yoga studios, and cafes all with the goal of bringing music into the lives of young people. Alicia Drakiotes' Series workshop is starting soon at Sharon Arts Center. "Expanding Your Work through Creating a Series" "As artists, we all dream of special projects. This discussion and critique-based course explores the need for more than one work of art to convey an idea or technique. Students will identify their artistic longings, formulate realistic goals for a series of paintings or drawings to express these desires, and then work to accomplish these goals in a supportive group environment. Students will produce their pieces outside of class, while those who require studio time may work during class. All 2D media are welcome. Participants should have basic skills in their chosen medium, and should be prepared to share work and works-in-progress with the class." John Burk, well-known photographer and author of pictorial and historical books about the Quabbin area and beyond, will teach a class at the Petersham Art Center on Saturday, October 4, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., on how to get the best photo opportunities during the upcoming New England foliage season. This indoor/outdoor workshop will feature classroom discussion, followed by travel to area waterfalls, waterscapes, and favorite autumn foliage vantage points to capture the stunning autumn scenes. Burk will teach about strategies and techniques to create flowing water images and how to capture the brilliant and subtle colors of the season. John Burk has travelled extensively throughout the New England region. His books include "Wildlife of New England: Where to Find, Appreciate and Photograph Animals of the Northeast," "Quabbin Reservoir Through Time," and "New England's Natural Wonders: An Explorer's Guide". The class is $40 for non-members and $20 for members. Teenagers to adults are invited to participate. Participants must bring their own camera and tripod. Hey Day 2014, scheduled for October 4, 2014 at Wachusett Meadow Mass Audubon Sanctuary in Princeton. co-sponsored by the Mass Audubon at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, the Princeton Arts Society, and the Princeton Agricultural Commission. This year's event promises to be even more successful than 2013, with more of everything, including food, music, family activities, and most importantly lots of attendees! Depending on weather, attendance normally ranges between 500 and 1,000 people. Art will be exhibited in both the Crocker House and attached classroom which were very popular last year. MCC's Artist Fellowships are competitive, anonymously-judged grants for Massachusetts individual artists, with awards based solely on the artistic quality and creative ability of the original work submitted. This cycle, applications are accepted in the following categories: Crafts, Dramatic Writing, and Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Online applications available NOW Application deadline: October 6, 2014 Film & Video, Music Composition, and Photography Online applications available: December 15, 2014 Application deadline: January 26, 2015 Read tips on applying. The River's Edge Arts Alliance and River's Edge Community Band announce a Young Artist Band Competition. Young Artist Band Competition for students who play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. Auditions by appointment on Dec. 6, 2014. Winner will perform a solo with the River's Edge Community Band at an evening concert on March 29, 2015. First Runner up will have the opportunity to perform in the lobby before the concert. Art Support is a website dedicated to providing support and resources for artists of all types. The following is just a small list of support provided to artists:
Organizations Helping Visual Artists, US Government Art Organizations, State Agencies and Art Commissions, Non Governmental Art Organizations, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Laws Regarding Visual Arts, Artist Consultants, Grants for Artists & Grant Assistance, Artist Health Insurance, and many other legal support and resources for Massachusetts artists.

Have news about exhibits, awards, events, classes, Call for Artists or other art info?
Please send your news "publication ready" to [email protected]. See previous newsletters for example formats and the type of info to provide.
We strongly recommend that you include a digital image related to the news as well as your website address & links to any venues.
Image filenames should include the name of the artist and the work.
Please post your press releases online whenever possible and submit a link.
Submission deadline is generally the 23rd of each month for publication on the 1st.
Inclusion of items/announcements is always at the discretion of GALA,
but inclusion of submissions from non-members is limited to
information deemed to be of benefit to GALA members.
