En Plein Air with GALA  
Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, 10 am to 1 pm
(Rain date: Sept. 27, 2014)

The final 2014 meeting of "En Plein Air with GALA" will be Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10 am at Doane's Falls in Royalston, MA. Come and join your fellow artists for painting, drawing, photography, or any portable medium in the fresh air. In the event of rain we will try again on Sept. 27.     

What will you need? Anything that will help you create art outside of your studio. The hope is for a couple of hours capturing the scenery as only artists can, then convening for a gathering afterwards to gain perspective on the day's results.

Diane Lincoln - Playing For Change Day - New Salem, MA

GALA member Diane (Linq) Lincoln is coordinating a Playing For Change Day Sing-Along at the 1794 Meetinghouse in New Salem on Saturday, September 20th at 7:30 p.m.

PLAYING FOR CHANGE DAY, created in 2011 in response to the enthusiasm inspired by 'Songs around the World' and the mission of the non-profit Playing For Change Foundation, unites a global community through the power of music to affect positive social change. Communities now gather annually as musicians from all over the world perform on stages, street corners, schools, yoga studios, and cafes all with the goal of bringing music into the lives of young people.

Linq invites GALA members to lend your voices to her Sing-Along and hopes that you'll join this global event for social change through music.  Lyrics will be provided.

There will be a sliding scale donation requested at the door, but no one will be turned away. If you can't attend the event but would like to contribute, the direct link for donations to Linq's event is here:

The Jaffrey Civic Center's ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW, which opened Aug. 22nd, runs through September 27th.   Many fine works are for sale.

Alicia Drakiotes at Passionate Pursuits Exhibitions - Keene, NH
Alicia Drakiotes has been accepted into the "Passionate Pursuits" exhibition to be held at the Thorne Sagendorph Gallery.

Her exhibited works are among her painted "Vintage Americana" pieces which portray aged vehicles and structures.

Alicia Drakiotes' Series workshop is starting soon at Sharon Arts Center.

"Expanding Your Work through Creating a Series"

"As artists, we all dream of special projects. This discussion and critique-based course explores the need for more than one work of art to convey an idea or technique. Students will identify their artistic longings, formulate realistic goals for a series of paintings or drawings to express these desires, and then work to accomplish these goals in a supportive group environment. Students will produce their pieces outside of class, while those who require studio time may work during class. All 2D media are welcome. Participants should have basic skills in their chosen medium, and should be prepared to share work and works-in-progress with the class."

This is a ten week course from Tuesday, Sept. 9th - Nov. 18th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with No Prerequisite, limited to 12 participants. Tuition:  $258 - Member Rate:  $220.

Photography Class, John Burk - Petersham, MA 
Falling Leaves & Waterfalls: Autumn Photography Class at Petersham Art Center.

"Roaring Brook" John Burk
John Burk, well-known photographer and author of pictorial and historical books about the Quabbin area and beyond, will teach a class at the Petersham Art Center on Saturday, October 4, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., on how to get the best photo opportunities during the upcoming New England foliage season.

This indoor/outdoor workshop will feature classroom discussion, followed by travel to area waterfalls, waterscapes,  and favorite autumn foliage vantage points to capture the stunning autumn scenes. Burk will teach about strategies and techniques to create flowing water images and how to capture the brilliant and subtle colors of the season.

John Burk has travelled extensively throughout the New England region. His books include  "Wildlife of New England: Where to Find, Appreciate and Photograph Animals of the Northeast," "Quabbin Reservoir Through Time," and "New England's Natural Wonders: An Explorer's Guide". 

The class is $40 for non-members and $20 for members.  Teenagers to adults are invited to participate.  Participants must bring their own camera and tripod. Call the Petersham Art Center for more information at 978-724-3415.

Photofest 2014 - Juried Show - Quinebaug Valley Council for the Arts & Humanities - Southbridge, MA
QVCAH is seeking photographers to submit original work for inclusion in this juried group exhibition. Several prizes will be awarded by the jurors, and the awards will be presented at the opening reception of the exhibition on Thursday, September 11th, 2014 from 6-8 p.m.

Photofest will be on view throughout September in the QVCAH galleries. This exhibition and reception are both free to attend and open to the public.

Submission Guidelines and Eligibility

QVCAH invites all artists in the USA to enter their original photographs for this juried group exhibition.  There is no cost for entry (Up to 5 entries per artist). Deadline for submissions:  September 4th, 2014.

Accepted work must be framed, gallery wrapped, or otherwise prepared for display with no visible staples, and wired for hanging. Please see our guidelines for preparing your artwork.

For Prizes and additional information visit the QVCAH website for more information, and to submit an entry form online. Do not send original artwork until you have received notification of acceptance into Photofest.

Hey Day 2014, Princeton Arts Society - Princeton, MA
Hey Day 2014, scheduled for October 4, 2014 at Wachusett Meadow Mass Audubon Sanctuary in Princeton. co-sponsored by the Mass Audubon at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, the Princeton Arts Society, and the Princeton Agricultural Commission.

This year's event promises to be even more successful than 2013, with more of everything, including food, music, family activities, and most importantly lots of attendees! Depending on weather, attendance normally ranges between 500 and 1,000 people. Art will be exhibited in both the Crocker House and attached classroom which were very popular last year.

LOCATION: Mass Audubon at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, Goodnow Road, Princeton, MA

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living within Central Massachusetts.

PARTICIPATION: As in past years, there will be two ways to participate: either as an Exhibitor or as a Demonstrator.

Treasured Places, Protected Spaces - Keene, NH
The Historical Society of Cheshire County has just released the prospectus & registration form for their exciting new art exhibit "Treasured Places, Protected Spaces" scheduled for May- Sept 2015.

The exhibit will consist of artwork depicting historic, conservation, or other protected properties in a widespread area under the rather loose canopy of "Monadnock Region" (it covers areas as far north as Hillsborough and as far east as Milford and all the way out to the VT and MA borders on west and south).

MCC has announced that the 2015 Artist Fellowships guidelines, dates, and deadlines are now available at this link:  Guidelines.  MCC's Artist Fellowships are competitive, anonymously-judged grants for Massachusetts individual artists, with awards based solely on the artistic quality and creative ability of the original work submitted.

This cycle, applications are accepted in the following categories:

Performing Arts - Acting Classes for children and teens offered by the ACT Theater Company.

Intro to ACTing (grades 3,4,5)
Description: This 6 week class focuses on the beginning skills needed for theater. We will play theatre games, work on improv exercises, projection exercises for voice and diction, and basic character work.

ACTing for Middle School (grades 6,7,8)
Description: In this 6 week class we will work on character development, motivation, tactics, specificity exercises, visualization exercises, skits and improv skills, and short monologues.

Description: This is a performance based showcase of talent. A cabaret of students who will work on 2 group numbers, solos, duets or small group pieces to be presented

Description: In this class students will learn how to put a musical theatre piece together, combining music, choreography, and "acting the song". In addition to rehearsing musical theatre pieces, class will consist of acting games to improve self-confidence and improvisational skills, along with basic music theory and piano skills. Young Artist Band Competition for students who play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments.  Auditions by appointment on Dec. 6, 2014.  Winner will perform a solo with the River's Edge Community Band at an evening concert on March 29, 2015.  First Runner up will have the opportunity to perform in the lobby before the concert. 

Students must be in Grade 12 or younger at date of performance, reside in Hudson or one of its surrounding towns or be a student or child of a River's Edge Arts Alliance member. Present a letter of application signed by a parent or guardian; Present a letter of recommendation from a private instructor or school band/orchestra director.  Submit $25 fee with application.  Submit  application by Nov. 29, 2014.  Audition time will be arranged upon receipt of application.

The Central Mass chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art (CMWCA) is accepting new memberships.   We are a national organization that supports, develops and celebrates art making by women.  We create exhibition opportunities; network with artists regionally, nationally and internationally;  and offer educational programs locally. We are organized as an artists' collective where each member contributes to our vision and works as needed to carry our mission forward.
