Speaking of something wonderful, we are updating our "Featured Artist" section of the GALA website.  We have added an artist, Doreen LaScola.  Doreen is a mixed media artist who is a member of Gardner Area League of Artists, as well as other area art organizations.  She studied Fine Art at Minneapolis College of Art & Design and the University of Massachusetts Boston.  Please visit the Featured Artist section of the GALA website to check out Doreen's work.

We have decided that our newsletter is missing something.....  a name.  We would like our members to participate in naming the newsletter.  So, get your creative thinking cap on, and submit your suggestions for consideration.  All entries must be submitted via email to Sue Weber by September 1, her email address is suwebr@yahoo.com. The name will be chosen by the Board at their next meeting and will be announced in the October 1st newsletter.

 Call for Artists Princeton Art Society's Hey Day 
On Saturday, October 5th (Rain Date October 6th), the
Princeton Art Society (PAS) will be holding their annual HEY DAY event, cosponsored by the Mass Audubon Society, by the Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary and the Princeton Agricultural Commission.  This is a non-judged art show for artists 18 years or older living in Central Massachusetts. 
It will be held at Mass Audubon at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, Goodnow Road, Princeton, MA.  An artist may participate as an Exhibitor or a Demonstrator.  This show is open to all media categories. Entries should comply with the theme of the event, which is focused on farming, farm animals,
landscapes, country living, conservation, nature and/or wildlife.  Applications MUST  be  received no later than September 15th.

Better Landscape Photography with your Digital Camera - Two Day Workshop by Guy Biechele
Into the Light
In this two day workshop you will learn how to make better landscape photographs. You will explore how to use the special features of your digital camera to make landscape photography techniques easier. After a discussion of the elements of good landscape photography, you will head into the field to practice at a couple of local sites. After a picnic lunch (please bring your own) and more photography, you will return to the classroom to review and discuss the photos made.
What to bring: Digital camera, camera manual, extra batteries, memory cards, and tripod. Optional Equipment: different camera lenses, circular polarizing filter and remote shutter release if you have them. Also recommended, appropriate clothing for the weather, insect repellent, and comfortable sturdy shoes.

Chuck Heidorn's Exhibit Extension

Chuck Heidorn will be extending his exhibit of panoramic photo collages, watercolors, drawings, and prints at the Heywood Library, 55 W Lynde St, Gardner, through September 30th.  So, if you did not have the opportunity to see his work hanging at the library, then now's your chance!

February Thaw Crooked River
The  landscape, "A February Thaw on Crooked River", is a scene from the woods of Maine.
With easy-to-follow instruction students will complete the painting in one session.  Cost is $25
 (or $20 if you purchase your own canvas).  Students who have painted with Lori before will have their own paints and brushes.  If you need to use class brushes and paints,
an additional $8 fee is charged.  Lori is offering this workshop in two locations:  at the Boulder Art Gallery, 960 Main St., Fitchburg on Saturday, August 17th from  9am-3pm.  The workshop will also be offered at Lori's studio, 205 School St., Gardner on Saturday, August 24th from 9am-3pm.

Post Road Art Center's Upcoming Art Show
2013 Post Road Art Center's Annual Landscape and Seascape Show September 2013
 at the Post Road Art Center.  This late Summer art show runs from
September 7th through the 25th. 
The deadline for applying to this juried art show is  August 29th @ 7:00PM.  Drop off is from August 22-29th at the PRAC during regular business hours.
The Judge for this show will be Elizabeth Geller, Head of the Corporate Program at the
DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.

 Photoshop Elements with Gyakyi Bonsu-Anane
on September 21, 2013, 10-4 p.m.
Although Photoshop Elements is sometimes thought of as a pared down version of Photoshop, once you can get the basics of it you will find that it too is a very powerful piece of software. You will not only learn the tools that allow you to make your photographs look better but, you will learn the fundamentals of how to create more than what you have.

Robert Carsten - It's Raining, It's Pouring- Pastel Painting Workshop

Van Gogh, Monet, Whistler and other great masters utilized the visual drama of depicting fields, gardens, towns or people in rain, fog and mist. Learn how to create unique and beautiful tonal effects and atmosphere laden with moisture to soften colors and forms. Demonstration and discussion will include pastel painting rain, fog and mist. Materials list provided.  All levels welcome.

Joanne Holtje, Selected!
A painting by Joanne Holtje has been selected by
Executive Director, Katherine French for inclusion in the Danforth Art Museum's show, Community of Artists
Close to 1500 works of art were submitted for consideration in this juried art show.  Joanne was one of those extremely talented artists selected to participate in the show.  Congratulations!
There isn't much time left, the exhibition continues through August 4, 2013.

Len Haug's Up-Coming Event
Len Haug's "Love Bug" has been juried into the 2013 Annual Danforth Art Museum's "Off the Wall" Exhibit that opened on June 8th at Danforth Art Museum and runs through August 4th.  The Museum is located at 123 Union Avenue in Framingham, MA. This highly competitive show received over 500 artist and 1500 submissions of which less than 100 were selected for inclusion in the show. Each year, the Danforth Art Museum's Annual Juried Exhibitions showcase new and exciting contemporary work created by both emerging and established member artists.
Len's collage "The Love Bug" was also awarded the GALA's "Best in Show" Ribbon in the 2012 Fall Show.

64 MILES: The Ashuelot River Exhibition
 Celebrate the history, recreation and beauty of the Ashuelot River that starts in Washington, NH and ends where it merges with the Connecticut River in Hinsdale, NH.  A full "64 Miles" of natural beauty which has helped develop the Monadnock Region of NH. 
The 2D and 3D exhibition will continue to run through Sept 30, 20113.  Check it out!

River's Edge Arts Alliance Upcoming Events
The River's Edge Arts Alliance is having an exhibit entitled, Summer Gardens at the Citizens Bank,17 Pope Street in Hudson, MA.  The exhibit will be on display throughout the summer,
