The Program in Visual Arts is presenting Hand {Made} Ready, a senior thesis exhibition by certificate student Clare Arentzen, on view through Friday, March 28 in the Lucas Gallery at 185 Nassau Street. Arentzen's exhibition includes collections of natural found objects, ready-made found objects, and handmade objects rooted in her interests in biology, natural history, process, and her midwestern upbringing. Gallery hours are weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Fund for Irish Studies lecture 
by Erskine Childers
Today! Friday, March 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Writer and Irish historian Erskine Childers will lecture on "The Riddle of Erskine Childers" as part of the Fund for Irish Studies lecture series on Friday, March 28. Childers will talk about his great-grandfather Robert Erskine Childers, an author, political activist, and major figure in the Irish revolution. The lecture, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the James M. Stewart '32 Theater at 185 Nassau Street, is free and open to the public.

Exhibition of photography by senior Nathan Tyrell
Monday, March 31 - Friday, April 4
 
The Program in Visual Arts will present a senior thesis exhibition by certificate student Nathan Tyrell from March 31 through April 4 in the Lucas Gallery at 185 Nassau Street. Tyrell's exhibition will feature medium format color photographs of raw industrial materials such as piles of scrap aluminum, taken during his summer spent working in an aluminum factory in Germany as a Keller Center Ruhr fellow. An opening reception will be held in the Lucas Gallery on Thursday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m. Gallery hours are weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public

Lecture and screening by 
José Carlos Teixeira
Monday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m.
 
Visual artist and researcher José Carlos Teixeira will present a lecture about his interdisciplinary work on Monday, March 31 as part of Lecturer in Dance Claudia La Rocco's spring dance criticism course, "The Art of Seeing: Choreography in the Contemporary Moment." Using strategies of group participation and collaboration, Teixeira investigates notions of identity, language, boundary, otherness, exile and displacement in his work. Presented by the Program in Dance, the Program in Visual Arts, and the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies at Princeton, the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Patricia and Ward Hagan '48 Dance Studio at 185 Nassau Street and is free and open to the public

Lecture by Michael Zryd on "The Hunger Games" and "The Conformist"
Thursday, April 3 at 4:30 p.m.

The third of four lectures in the "4 the Love of Film" series will take place on Thursday, April 3 at 4:30 p.m. Associate Professor in Cinema and Media Studies at York University Michael Zryd will speak on "Political Allegories in The Hunger Games and The Conformist." In his lecture, Zryd will show how both films present allegories that mobilize the aesthetics and politics of decadence in relation to fascism. The event will be held in the James M. Stewart '32 Theater at 185 Nassau Street and is free and open to the public.

Trial reenactment part of the Critical Encounters Lecture Series
Thursday, April 3 at 4:30 p.m.

On Thursdsay, April 3, the Critical Encounters Lecture Series will present "The Case of the 22 Lewd Chinese Women." Professor of Theater R.N. Sandberg will direct the performance, which is a re-enactment of a dramatic 19th-century trial that still resonates today with heated issues about immigration reform, state vs. federal power, and racial profiling. Featuring Princeton students as readers and the Honorable Judge Denny Chin as moderator, the event will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Room 120 at Lewis Library. Cosponsored by the Department of English, Program in Law and Public Affairs, Center for African American Studies, Lewis Center for the Arts, and the Asian American Students Association, the event is free and open to the public.

Thursday, April 3 at 6:00 p.m.

The Lewis Center and Labyrinth Books will host "War from the Inside," an evening of readings by three authors who have written about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reading will seek to open a conversation between the Iraqi point of view, represented by Hassan Blasim, author of The Corpse Exhibition; the Afghan point of view, represented by Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya, who wrote about the war in Afghanistan in The Watch; and the point of view of American soldiers, represented by Roy Scranton's edited collection Fire and Forget: Short Stories from the Long War. Former New York Times journalist and author Chris Hedges will give an introduction to the reading, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Labyrinth Books at 122 Nassau Street in Princeton. The event is free and open to the public.

Celtic rock band performs on 
farewell tour
Friday, April 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Renowned Celtic rock band Black 47 will perform in concert at Princeton on Friday, April 4, as part of the Fund for Irish Studies series. Black 47 is disbanding after 25 years together performing songs about such topics as the Northern Ireland conflict, civil rights, and urban unrest in contemporary New York. Their farewell tour of the U.S. recently included a St. Patrick's Day performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon--click here to watch a clip! The concert will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center and is free and open to the public. Exhibition of new work by senior Cara Michell 
April 7-11


The Program in Visual Arts will present a senior thesis exhibition by certificate student Cara Michell from April 7 through April 11 in the Lucas Gallery at 185 Nassau Street. Michell's interactive exhibition will include sculptural work that explore acts of of exclusivity and privatization in urban spaces based on skateboard culture. An opening reception will be held in the Lucas Gallery on Thursday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. For more information on events Michell will host in the gallery during her exhibition, click here. Critical Encounters event with Arts Fellow

Critical Encounters brings together like minds from unlike disciplines in a series of open dialogue before the campus community and the public. On Monday, April 7, "Being Insomniac with Tan Lin" will feature a reading by poet Tan Lin followed by a conversation between Lin, graphic artist and 2013-15 Princeton Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts Danielle Aubert, and Professor of English Anne Cheng. Jointly sponsored by the Department of English and the Center for African American Studies, the event will begin at 4:30 p.m. in McCormick Hall 106 and is free and open to the public.

Chang-rae Lee reads from his latest novel

On Tuesday, April 8, Professor of Creative Writing and bestselling author Chang-rae Lee will read from his new novel, On Such a Full Sea. The book is a highly provocative, deeply affecting story of one woman's legendary quest in a shocking, future America. The reading will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Labyrinth Books at 122 Nassau Street in Princeton and is free and open to the public.

Collaborative performance by senior dance students 
April 11 & 12


The Program in Dance will present Re(verb), a senior thesis performance featuring new choreography by certificate students Samantha Gebb, Casey Brown, Tess Bernhard and Sarah Rose, as well as repertory/new pieces featuring Paige Hupy and Cloe Cheney-Rice, Maya Kelley and Meghan Angelos by Zvi Gotheiner, Jessica Lang and John Heginbotham. Performances will be held on Friday, April 11 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. in the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students/seniors and are available through the McCarter Box Office by calling 609.258.2787.

Performance artist Aaron Landsman and poet Dora Malech have been named this year's Princeton University Fellows in the Creative and Performing Arts and will begin two years of teaching and collaboration in September. Open to artists in all disciplines, fellows are selected for a two-year residency to teach one course each semester or, in lieu of a course, to undertake an artistic assignment. To read more about the fellows, click here.


The Lewis Center for the Arts encompasses Princeton University's academic programs in creative writing, dance, theater, and visual arts, as well as the interdisciplinary Princeton Atelier.
