A Steady Rain

A Steady RainA Steady Rain, a gritty psychological crime drama by Keith Huff, premiered in Chicago in 2007. It won the Joseph Jefferson Award, Chicago's equivalent of the Tonys, for Best New Work, Best Actor and Best Production. In 2009, it opened on Broadway starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman and was named by Time magazine as one of the top ten shows of the year. A Steady Rain is a senior thesis production featuring J.T. Glaze '13 and Adam Stasiw '13. Directed by faculty member R.N. Sandberg. The show will run January 11-13 at 8:00 p.m. in the Marie and Edward Matthews '53 Acting Studio at 185 Nassau Street. Watch the trailer here.

Recent Sculpture and Ceramic Work

Sculpture and CeramicsThis exhibition features recent sculpture and ceramic work by students enrolled in fall Visual Arts courses at the Lewis Center for the Arts. The work is currently on display in the lobby at 701 Carnegie Center and is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through February 8. Muscle Memory: Performances and Objects

Muscle MemoryThe Programs in Dance and Visual Arts will present new work that represents explorations in a wide range of media and performance. All of the performances and objects were created by students in the dance and sculpture co-taught courses "Muscle Memory," which investigated how bodily movements in relation to objects can be considered dance in some contexts and visual art in others. The performance will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Lucas Gallery at 185 Nassau Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Screening of New Student Films

New Student FilmsA screening of new documentaries will feature three student works entitled Lost Boy, Battle for the Field, and Moo. The films are the culmination of the Fall 2012 course "Documentary Filmmaking" taught by Emily Abt. The screening and following reception will take place from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the James M. Stewart '32 Theater at 185 Nassau Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Dance Performance Lab 185

Dance Performance LabDance Performance Lab will feature student work that represents a diverse array of choreographic genres. Students were invited to submit recent new choreography to Dance program faculty, who then curated the submissions. The performance will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18 and Saturday, January 19 in the Patricia and Ward Hagan '48 Dance Studio at 185 Nassau Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Princeton Poetry Festival: March 15-16, 2013

Princeton Poetry FestivalPrinceton's biennial Poetry Festival is back! The Festival features an international line-up of poets including Gabeba Baderoon (South Africa), Bei Dao (China), Stephen Dunn (U.S.), Sheriff Ghale (Ghana), Jorie Graham (U.S.), Lizzie Hutton '95 (U.S.), Amit Majmudar (U.S.), Bejan Matur (Turkey), Don Paterson (Scotland), Gary Whitehead (U.S.), Xi Chuan (China), and Monica Youn '93 (U.S.). The New Jersey State Finals of the national Poetry Out Loud program will kick-off the Festival on Friday, March 15. Watch for more details to come in future newsletters.

Princeton Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts Offered

Princeton University invites applications for the inaugural Princeton Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts, funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Fellowships will be awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. Applicants should be early career artists who would find it beneficial to spend two years working in an artistically vibrant university community. Fellows will be in residence for academic years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 at Princeton, interacting with students, faculty and staff as part of the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Department of Music. Fellows will teach a course or may be asked to take on an artistic assignment, such as directing a play, conducting a student music ensemble, or creating a dance with students. Fellows will be full and active members of our community, committed to frequent and engaged interactions with students during the academic year. An annual stipend will be provided. Applications are due to be submitted by February 15, 2013.

 

The Lewis Center for the Arts encompasses Princeton University's academic programs in creative writing, dance, theater, and visual arts, as well as the interdisciplinary Princeton Atelier. The Center represents a major initiative of President Shirley M. Tilghman to fully embrace the arts as an essential part of the educational experience for all who study and teach at Princeton. Over 100 diverse public performances, exhibitions, readings, and lectures are offered each year, most of them free.
