PEN Center USA Honors Joyce Carol Oates and
Two Alumni |
The Lewis Center congratulates Roger S. Berlind '52 Professor of the Humanities and Professor of Creative Writing Joyce Carol Oates on her Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN Center USA, which will be presented to her on Monday, October 22 at a ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel. PEN Center USA's annual awards recognize literary excellence in eleven categories: fiction, creative nonfiction, research nonfiction, poetry, children's literature, graphic literature, translation, journalism, drama, teleplay, and screenplay. The center's mission is to stimulate and maintain interest in the written word, to foster a vital literary culture, and to defend freedom of expression domestically and internationally. In addition, Princeton alumni Alex Gansa '84 and Howard Gordon '84, along with Gideon Raff, are being recognized in the Teleplay category for the pilot of their hit Showtime series Homeland, starring Claire Danes and Damien Lewis, which also recently received an Emmy Award for outstanding drama series and a Golden Globe Award for best TV drama.

Lecture on "Art in Ireland Since 1910" by Art Historian Fionna Barber
Irish art historian Fionna Barber will present a lecture entitled, “Art in Ireland Since 1910,” on Friday, October 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lewis Center for the Arts' James M. Stewart '32 Theater, 185 Nassau Street. The lecture is part of a series presented by Princeton University's Fund for Irish Studies. The event is free and open to the public.

Drawing Class Show
The Program in Visual Arts presents a Drawing Class Show featuring work by over 40 students in VIS 201 Introductory Drawing taught by Eve Aschheim and Nathan Carter and VIS 401 Advanced Drawing taught by Kurt Kauper. The exhibit is on view through October 26 in the Lucas Gallery at the Lewis Center for the Arts at 185 Nassau Street. Gallery open weekdays 10 AM - 4:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public.

Queen of Versailles: Screening and Talk with Director Lauren Greenfield
Photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield will screen her feature-length documentary The Queen of Versailles, and discuss her work. The film presents Jackie and David, whose fortune was built on the booming time-share industry powered by the real estate bubble, as they begin building the biggest house in the U.S. a sprawling 90,000-square-foot mansion inspired by Versailles. The bubble bursts and their reversal of fortune over the next two years is captured in a riveting film fraught with delusion, denial, and self-effacing humor, and ultimately reveals the innate virtues and flaws of the American dream. Visual Arts Lecture by Sculptor Pam Lins
The Program in Visual Arts continues its Fall Lecture Series featuring faculty member and sculptor Pam Lins who will discuss her work on October 24. Lins employs a variety of interdisciplinary art forms to question how objects can function as images, what it means to "build" an image, and the process by which it gets made. The lecture series continues with painter Josephine Halvorson on November 7, and concludes with filmmaker Su Friedrich on December 5. The lectures will take place in the James M. Stewart '32 Theater at 185 Nassau Street at 6:30 PM and are free and open to the public.

Moya Brennan - the Voice of Clannad - with Family and Friends
Moya Brennan, a Grammy Award-winning musician, singer, and songwriter, will give a concert at the Taplin Auditorium in Fine Hall at Princeton University on November 5 at 5:00 p.m. Brennan is the lead vocalist for the Grammy Award-winning Irish band Clannad, known around the world for its blend of musical styles with traditional Irish music. Moya Brennan - the Voice of Clannad - with Family and Friends, is co-presented by the University's Lewis Center for the Arts Performance Central Series, the Index of Christian Art, and the Fund for Irish Studies, is free and open to the public, however advance ticket reservations are recommended. The Lewis Center for the Arts' Program in Theater in collaboration with the Department of Music will present a lavish world premiere of Der Bourgeois Bigwig on November 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center. Der Bourgeois Bigwig is a new adaptation by James Magruder of the Molière comedy Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme written to complement Richard Strauss' well-known orchestral suite and incidental music from 1912. This outrageous comedy is directed by Tim Vasen, Director of the Program in Theater, with the Department of Music's Michael Pratt conducting the Princeton University Orchestra. The project is made possible in part through the university's Arts Initiative program. Tickets are $10 students and seniors, and $15 general admission and may be ordered by calling University Ticketing at 609.258.9220 or the McCarter Box Office at 609.258.2787.
