Modern Iconography
On Exhibition at the Patchogue Arts Gallery from March 7 - April 18.
The term icon derives from the Greek word eikōn, meaning image. But it is also used to refer to a specific style of painting rooted in Eastern Catholicism dating back to the Middle Ages. These paintings depicting religious figures were standardized across Europe, allowing Christians to instantly recognize the images and their attributes regardless of where they were made.
Despite its broader meaning in the 21st century, the term icon is still used to refer to any instantaneously recognizable image, person, or object regardless of the time or place it originated. Marilyn Monroe, Sherlock Holmes, and the Eiffel Tower are all considered icons because they hold longstanding symbolic meaning that transcends time. The artists in Modern Iconography explore the concept of iconography using popular imagery as the basis for their artwork.

Looking Through a Window: Photographs by Carole J. Amodeo
Photograph by Carole J. Amodeo
In her photography, Carole J. Amodeo fabricates the experience of walking down a lively, busy street. She captures not only the storefront mannequins that model elegant dresses, but also the sounds of traffic and tall buildings that are cast by the reflective glass windows. Her work brings to mind notions of consumerism, fashion, and the hustle of a city lifestyle.
