Greetings!

In order to bring the Patchogue Arts Council more fully in step with the digital age, we are updating our Web site and have revised our bylaws.  Now and in the future the annual voting in of the slate of our board members will be done on our Web site; look for the app to appear soon.  We encourage our members to be active participants as volunteers, whether it be manning the gallery, participating as committee members, attending receptions and fundraisers, or any other way as opportunities arise.

Thank you all for your support and participation,
The Patchogue Arts Council Board of Trustees.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Patchogue Arts Council is seeking volunteers, especially for gallery sitting. Send an email to [email protected] with the word "volunteer" in the subject line for more information.

Rasa Valiene
Thru May 5, 2014
The Patchogue Arts Council Members Gallery Wall at Roast Coffee and Tea Trading Co
41 E. Main St., Patchogue
Opening Reception April 6, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM

Rasa Valiene has been painting since childhood and received her degree in the arts at the College of Arts in her home country of Lithuania. She showed her artwork across Eastern Europe before moving to New York in 2001. In her Amber Heart series, she brings together the beauty of Long Island beaches with her own perception of the natural world. For the artist, amber is representative of her Lithuanian heritage while also serving as a reminder of our fragile future. She hopes Amber Heart raises awareness for environmental preservation, inspiring people to be mindful of their harmful actions detrimental to the environment.

Minutiae
Featuring the Work of Martin Levine, Patricia Mamatos, and Paul Farinacci
Patchogue Arts Gallery, 20 Terry St., Patchogue
Through April 19, 2014

In a time in which speed is the norm, where the spontaneous gesture is celebrated, there are still those who find delight in meticulous craftsmanship. The artists in "Minutiae" are joined together by processes which take the time to attend to fine detail.
Martin Levine

Martin Levine's architectural studies, both urban and rural, pay homage to those structures' effects on the human condition.  His hand drawn aquatint etchings and lithographs take months to complete because of the "obsession with detail and intense involvement with every technical aspect of the medium."

Paul Farinacci

Paul  Farinacci examines society's standards for living by studying the educational, political, and religious institutions that power it. Embedded within an architectural framework are vignettes which explore the effects of media/technology on the diminishing distinction between public and private life. As viewers peer into these interior spaces, they are confronted by the voyeuristic obsession of contemporary media.
Patricia Mamatos

Patricia Mamatos moves between the simple and the complex. She revels in the virtuosity of pencil and pen. Beginning with inspiration from nature, her work moves to the surreal. The graceful lines found in nature are injected with incongruity, producing dreamlike images that are "vaguely uncomfortable but none the less compelling."

Each year Long Island artists, professionals, amateurs, teachers, and students create works of art that interpret and explore the struggles and joys of living in a diverse community and the impact of prejudice and hatred on human dignity and/or the varied people, cultures and perspectives in our world. Selected artwork will be displayed at multiple venues and will have an enormous impact on building an inclusive society - one that rejects hatred. Visit www.chdhu.org or call 631-451-4117 for more information.

Patchogue Artspace Gallery located at 20 Terry St. in Patchogue presents "Northwest Meets Southeast," an exhibition of photographs by 30 Long Island fine art photographers from March 16-30 with a reception on Saturday, March 22 from 7:00-9:30 PM.  A chance meeting of two fine art photographers, Aleta Cortes of Patchogue Artspace and Holly Gordon of FotoFoto Gallery in Huntington, like Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, but no murder to be committed - just a killer photography exhibition, led to Aleta suggesting that the two groups of Long Island artists hang together in the Patchogue Artspace Gallery. Compared to North by Northwest, the coordinates of northwest and southeast draw us into this production with breathless anticipation and suspense. This collaboration of 30 Long Island artists is a visual feast to be followed by a reciprocal exhibit in Huntington later in this year. For more information contact Aleta Cortes at [email protected], 304-445-8717 or Holly Gordon at [email protected], 631-835-0697.
Sketch
Patchogue Sketch Club
The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form; sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera.

For more information about upcoming sketch outings and gatherings visit their blog at

The Patchogue Arts Council and Herstory Writer's Workshop invites you to join our ongoing memoir-writing workshop, Bridges To Justice.  Join men and women from all walks of life as they share their true stories about their efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive world.  Erika Duncan, Herstory founder, novelist, and former writer for
The New York Times Long Island Weekly, facilitates this free weekly workshop designed to unite and inspire our community.  No writing experience is necessary, simply the desire to connect through your story and the stories of the other participants.

The Bridges To Justice workshop meets every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to Noon at the Patchogue Arts Gallery located at 20 Terry St. in Patchogue.  It was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Briarcliffe College, and the New York State Council on the Arts.   For more information, email [email protected].
