On exhibit at the PAC Members Gallery at Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Co, 41 E. Main St. Patchogue through January 11, 2014

Greetings!

Please join us at the Patchogue Arts Gallery located at 20 Terry St. on Saturday, January 11 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM for a reception celebrating the opening of Pre-Cognition which features works by Lorena Salcedo-Watson, Mena Romano, and Deborah Zlotsky. The exhibit will be on display until February 22.

The artists in "Pre-Cognition" each present imagery verging on, but never quite attaining, recognition. Viewers approach each work with the feeling that the imagery is just beyond their grasp and that with a bit more contemplation the images will reveal themselves. The viewer is essentially in a state of pre-recognition.

Lorena Salcedo-Watson's current work consists of large-scale charcoal drawings and prints that focus on the relationships between the structures and essential qualities of life forms. She is fascinated with human anatomy, botany, and entomology. She creates imaginary "landscapes" that transform and re-interpret aspects of nature, filtered by personal experience, observation, and imagination.

Mena Romano is interested in the gestures and expressions of the human form, ranging from the classical beauty of 15th century Italian sculpture to the powerful expressionistic forms of Rodin. Clay is her preferred medium for her gestural sculptures. Each piece begins with an idea from a previous work and then evolves into its own form that defines the work. Her creative journey is ongoing and is inspired by past experiences, personal memories, and her own observations.

Deborah Zlotsky's drawing series, LifeLike, finds the artist manipulating powdered graphite on sheets of mylar through a process of documenting what she sees as the velvety material is applied to the surface. While the final images are fictitious, the illustrations she creates blur the line of documenting nature and inventing her own reality, leading viewers to question the credibility of what they see.

Draft Request for Proposals
The Patchogue Arts Council (PAC), as consultant to the Community Development Agency (CDA), is requesting proposals for a public mural at Furman Square in the Village of Patchogue on a south-facing exterior building wall located at 26 South Ocean Avenue.  The mural will be seen looking north toward the intersection of South Ocean Avenue and Main Street, long known as the Famous Four Corners.

The intersection has historical significance as the commercial center of Patchogue Village dating back to the 19th century.  The most iconic building was Swezey's Department Store on the northwest corner of the intersection.  It and other buildings that once were visible from the proposed mural site are well documented in historic photographs available online and in the history room of the Patchogue-Medford Library.

The artist is encouraged to present a proposal that is a personal interpretation of the vibrancy and architecture associated with the view described above circa 1900.

The Bridges To Justice workshop meets every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to Noon at the Patchogue Arts Gallery located at 20 Terry St. in Patchogue.  It was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Briarcliffe College, and the New York State Council on the Arts.   For more information, email [email protected].

Shock - U - Mentaries features site-specific installations and works created for the Islip Art Museum. Exhibiting artists include Lorrie Fredette, Tony Ingrisano, Tobi Kahn, Heather Layton, and Jeffery Allen Price. Installations are intended to lure the viewer in, yet upon further examination they encounter a thought provoking work and must explore the artists' reaction to disaster whether it is personal, local, national, or international.  The opening reception will feature electro-acoustic landscapes by Multiple Mono.

In support of local artists, the Islip Art Museum's gift shop will feature the exhibition of Flora-Fauna featuring the work of Jennifer Formica. Formica's photographic images are meant to evoke the inner psyche and reveal the hidden beauty of organic matter.

Patchogue Sketch Club
The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form; sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera.

For more information about upcoming sketch outings and gatherings visit their blog at
