March News
Greetings!

The Patchogue Arts Gallery Presents
LOST CIVILIZATIONS
Featuring Tina Folks, Robert Mielenhausen, and Jose Ojeda
Reception: March 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Through April 20th
Folks, Kachina Dolls
Tina Folks is a ceramic sculptor and has been working with clay for over twenty-five years. Her sculptures evoke the mythologies of ancient civilizations from Egypt to the Americas, exploring both the heavenly and earthly realms. Her latest Tablets series examines the notion of record keeping as she uses its imagery to recall obsolete objects from our modern society.

Mielenhausen, Ila Poppea

Robert Mielenhausen has had his art exhibited in numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad over the course of his career. For his recent mixed-media reliefs, he draws inspiration from the artistic and architectural remains of ancient Rome. The art embraces the literal and the abstract, transporting the viewer to a rich and mysterious period of time.

Ojeda, My Life in Transit
Jose Ojeda is a fine artist from the Bronx and recently received his  MFA from Stony Brook University. His artwork deals with the excavation of identity through resurrecting ancient history and heritage within a modern context.  By combining his interests in pre-Hispanic metallurgy with popular culture icons from his youth, he bends the perceptions of time.

The Patchogue Arts Council and Herstory Writer's Workshop are also presenting two writing circles through the support of the Knapp Swezey Foundation and Briarcliffe College.

Memoirs of Motherhood: Connecting Through Our Stories
This free, bilingual women's writing circle is designed to build bridges across the community as mothers of all ages are invited to share their joys, sorrows, hopes, hardships and dreams.  No writing experience is necessary, and participants are welcome to join at any time.  Thanks to the generosity of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, both mothers and children are welcome to attend our meetings, which are held Thursdays from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Tutor Time of East Patchogue located at 655 East Main Street.

Bridges to Justice: Connecting through Our Stories
Join us for a free bilingual writer's workshop that harnesses the power of memoirs to unite and inspire our community.  True stories have the power to change people's views on public policies, attitudes, and laws. Share your journey for justice with others who are also striving to create a more equitable and inclusive world.  No writing experience necessary.

Meetings are held at the Patchogue Arts Gallery at 20 Terry Street in Patchogue from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on alternating Wednesdays (2/20, 3/6, 3/20 and continuing through fall 2013).  You may join at any time.

Patchogue Sketch Club
The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form, sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera.

For more information about upcoming sketch outings and gatherings visit their blog at
