SOUTH BY SOUTH SHORE

The Patchogue Arts Council proudly announces the first "South By South Shore" festival, a cultural celebration in the Village of Patchogue April 2 - 7, 2013.  South by South Shore celebrates the  arts in Patchogue by coordinating events in music, art, film, theatre, and spoken word for six days at venues all over town. For fans of the arts, this continues the renaissance that has made Patchogue a destination for cultural tourists. The 1st Annual South By South Shore Music and Arts Festival will provide an opportunity for families and friends, locals and visitors to experience all the village has to offer while listening to heart-stopping folk melodies, getting down to funky beats, and enjoying local arts, eats, and entertainment.
South By South Shore
To add a festive atmosphere to the event, plans are in the works to incorporate a Saturday night New Orleans' style "Sidewalk Promenade" passing the venues participating in the festival. For more information, contact music@patchoguearts.org and stay tuned to next month's issue as we reveal our complete listing of participating venues!

Unheard Voices of Long Island's Living History
We hope you will join our Unheard Voices of Long Island's Living History meeting to be held Monday, February 18 from 6-8pm the Patchogue Arts Gallery. This reading circle shares stories from two of Herstory Writers Workshop's Anthologies,  Latinas Write/Escriben and Voices: Memoirs from Long Island's Correctional Facilities.   This month focuses on Witnesses To Violence.  The first story, For Marcelo, by Susan Perretti explores what goes in a mother's mind when she allows herself to "become" the mother of an Ecuadorian immigrant.  The second story of the evening, read by Katherine De la Cruz, traces a young woman's visit to her father in jail,  bringing up memories of  being a three year-old child witnessing what her father had done.  This story, looking at sorrow, separation and forgiveness, becomes an important beacon for the many who have been exposed to tragedy and violence.

The Patchogue Arts Council and Herstory Writer's Workshop are also presenting two writing circles through the support of the Knapp Swezey Foundation and Briarcliffe College.

Memoirs of Motherhood: Connecting Through Our Stories
This free, bilingual women's writing circle is designed to build bridges across the community as mothers of all ages are invited to share their joys, sorrows, hopes, hardships and dreams.  No writing experience is necessary and participants are welcome to join at any time.  Thanks to the generosity of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, both mothers and children are welcome to attend our meetings which are held Thursdays from 10am-12noon at Tutor Time of East Patchogue located at 655 East Main Street.

Bridges to Justice: Connecting through Our Stories
Join us for a free, bilingual writer's workshop that harnesses the power of memoirs to unite and inspire our community.  True stories have the power to change people's view on public policies, attitudes, and laws. Share your journey for justice with others who are also striving to create a more equitable and inclusive world.  No writing experience necessary.

Meetings are held at the Patchogue Arts Gallery at 20 Terry Street in Patchogue from 10am-12noon on alternating Wednesdays (2.20, 3.6, 3.20 and continuing through fall 2013).  You may join at any time.

Patchogue Sketch Club
The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form, sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera.

For more information about upcoming sketch outings and gatherings visit their blog at
