SANDY RELIEF FOR ARTISTS
 
The Huntington Arts Council compiled a list of resources for artists in need due to Sandy that you can access by viewing their newsletter here. In addition, New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) announced the creation of an emergency relief fund to support individual artists in all disciplines impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The application is available at www.nyfa.org and www.artspire.org, and submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. The program will be open to artists residing in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

In the Caribbean Islands where the community comes together to celebrate and experience flavorful food and festivals of music and art is known as La Placita. Experience the vibrant excitement of the Caribbean Plaza through La Placita, a survey of New York artists originally from the Caribbean or inspired by the culture of the Caribbean.

Francisco Alvarado-Juárez, David Antonio Cruz, Maria Dominguez, Becky Franco, Lisa Iglesias, Veronique Leriche Fischetti, Miguel Luciano, Reyes Melendez, Ronny Quevedo, celebrate the pride, heritage and traditions of the Caribbean by embracing the diverse population and infused cultures indicative of the islands through their artwork.
 
Local Events & Calls for Artists 

  

Artspace Patchogue Presents "Black & White: A Take on Tradition", which is certain to be a stark and visually arresting exhibition of resident and nonresident artists' works that are entirely comprised of black and white media.  The opening reception will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on January 12 at the Artspace building gallery at 20 Terry Street, and will feature among its offerings music by Johnathan Jackson and Long Island craft beer tasting with cheese pairings courtesy of new local juggernauts Hoptron Brewtique and American Cheese.  Suggested donation per person is $5.  Additional gallery hours are Thursday 1/17; 1/24 and Friday 1/18; 1/25 7:00 - 9:00 PM; Saturday 1/19; 1/26 and Sunday 1/13; 1/20 1:00-5:00 PM.

Windows on the Lake and Long Island Relief Associates are putting on a gala event for those hurt by Superstorm Sandy. Working together and through ambitious endeavors, Windows on the Lake and Long Island Relief Associates would like to give away a sum of $10,000 to five families affected by this tragic event. Join Long Island's most influential people and rising artists whose work will be auctioned off and a percent of the proceeds donated to the cause. Call for Arists: Art League of Long Island's 56th Long Island Artists Exhibition 
The Art League of Long Island is accepting applications from artists residing in Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens for their 56th Long Island Artists Exhibition taking place March 10 through April 14, 2013. Entry is limited to two original works not previously exhibited in the Art League's Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, only one of which may be selected. Two and three-dimensional work in any medium may be submitted, including photography and fine crafts (no videos). Application deadline is January 18, 2013. $500 Awards of Excellence and Honorable Mentions of one-year memberships in the Art League will be given at the discretion of the judge. Call for Artists:  Diversity 
The East End Arts Gallery is pleased to announce an open call for artist participation in the upcoming juried, all media art show, Diversity, at the East End Arts Gallery, which will open on Friday, January 18 and run through March 8, 2013, with a reception on Friday, February 1, 2013. The call is open to all artists to submit work created with the idea of diversity in mind. The guest juror for this show will be internationally-known East End artist Frank Wimberly. This show is in conjunction with an exhibit of a similar theme at the Suffolk County Historical Society. Original works in all media may be submitted, including: painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, video, sculpture and poetry; up to three entries can be submitted per artist. Entries will be accepted on Thursday, January 10; Friday, January 11; and Saturday, January 12 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the East End Arts Gallery. Call for Artists:  Reflection, A Juried Fine Art Exhibit

Reflection can be either a physical or psychological phenomenon. Together they evoke the interplay between perception and conception. Patchogue Sketch Club
The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form, sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera.
