Gabriel's Angels
Spring

2013

Greetings!

Thirteen years ago Pam took Gabriel for the first time to meet the children at the Crisis Nursery. As they drove home, Pam looked at Gabriel in the rear view mirror

and asked, "What did you just do?"

By his gaze back at her he seemed to answer,

"What dogs do best."

This year, Gabriel's Angels celebrates 13 amazing years of bringing healing pet therapy to 13,000 Arizona

children annually!

It is through YOU, our treasured Volunteer,

that we are able to continue the legacy that Gabriel began.

It is difficult for us to express how much we appreciate

your passion, time and talent.

Please join us on April 13th

for our Annual Volunteer Recognition Event

so we can truly celebrate YOU.

Thank you for being a Gabriel's Angels Volunteer!

All Handlers - Important Information

The New Pet Partners handler course teaches a technique that all handlers should employ when visiting with their animals. The Acronym for the technique is PETS, which is easy to
remember!
  • Proximity - Stay close to your animal. Kneeling down next to your animal helps you experience the interaction from your animal's perspective.
  • Eye contact - Look at your animal. Do you see any signs of stress? Is it time to stop the visit or take a break?
  • Touch - Make frequent contact with your animal through touch and petting during all interactions.
  • Speech Tone - Talk to your animal and to the person receiving the visit. Speaking in soothing and positive tones, provide your animal reassurance that he or she is doing a good job. By talking to the person receiving the visit, help guide him or her through the interaction with your animal.
A Teachable Moment

Love Trumps Fear
by Loralee Johnson & QB

Our first visit as a new Gabriel's Angels therapy team finally arrived! My three-year old Rottweiler, QB, and I walked into the alternative school in the West Valley. We could actually feel the anticipation radiating from the teenage boys.

To my delight the boys were immediately receptive to meeting my large and naturally out-going dog ... except one. Proclaiming fear of QB and retreating to the corner of the room, Lukas said loudly, "I had a bad experience with a dog and believe that all Rottweiler's will turn on you."   read more

Core Behavior
Tolerance
Tolerance is the ability to understand and accept differences. Tolerance is important because children that are more tolerant are less likely to react to differences in people with fear or violence. It's natural to be afraid of something that is new or different; however, the ability to face and overcome one's fear teaches a child how to value individual differences. Gabriel's Angels' Therapy Teams promote tolerance by encouraging children to discuss similarities and differences between dog breeds as a bridge to discussing their own similarities and differences. When children are able to listen respectfully, their capacity for building tolerance increases.

"During our 3.5 years at UMOM the little children loved to care for Hogan through soft brushing and helping me to walk him. I am grateful to all the children we visited and for the hundreds of special moments."
