Today there are limited treatments for teens with schizophrenia. This is because younger people can respond differently to medications than adults. Therefore medications are first approved for use in adults before going through further testing in teens. A clinical research study involves doctors and nurses studying how an investigation medication works in treating conditions such as schizophrenia. Clinical research studies are important in gathering information about how investigation medications work for different people. More treatment options are needed for teens with schizophrenia. This study is currently enrolling teens to find out whether an investigation medication approved for use in adults but not approved for use in children can be safely used to treat teens. Teen schizophrenia, if left untreated, can be one of the most disabling mental illnesses affecting teens today. Potential new medicines for teens with schizophrenia require clinical research studies to test their safety and effectiveness, and this can only happen through partnerships with medical researchers and parents of teens who have schizophrenia.
