Spring Events Spectacular
We are bringing it all to you this spring, lots of fun events and opportunities to get you out into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and to help you deepen your knowledge of its art, history, and culture.
 

Here is a quick spring calendar rundown, and we hope you can join us.

 

March 11- Shake off the winter blues and stretch your legs with Friends of the Smokies' first Classic Hike of the year. Renowned outdoor author and hiking expert, Danny Bernstein, will lead a guided hike to Little Cataloochee. Distance- 6.1 miles on Little Cataloochee Trail. This hike is easy in difficulty with a total elevation gain of 1,100 feet. A $10 donation for Friends members and $35 for non-members is requested to benefit the Trails Forever Fund.

March 12- Deadline to apply for this year's North Carolina Experience Your Smokies Program- Experience Your Smokies (North Carolina) is a unique opportunity to get to know the park and its employees in a whole new way. (The annual program costs $50.00 with funds going towards program administration and materials.) Apply online here through Friends of the Smokies


Applicants are requested to commit to this year's program dates which are- March 25th, April 8th, April 29th, May 6th, and Saturday, May 17th

March 20-22- Cascades of Diversity (Discover Life in America Annual Conference)- Go batty for science at this year's annual DLIA Conference with Dr. Merlin Tuttle, researcher/photographer of Bat Conservation International. March 27- Hiking 101 at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports- Join our Development Director Sarah Weeks to learn day hiking basics like how to pack your pack, how to lace your boots for maximum comfort, and more. Jordan of Blue Ridge Mountain Sports- Farrgut will present this informative, free, informal seminar at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy refreshments, too. Sign up with Sarah today

April 3-6- Legacy Weekend at Arrowmont 

  

 

  

Friends partners with Arrowmont to celebrate mountain history, heritage, and Appalachian culture. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is pleased to announce a new workshop experience with Legacy Weekend. The session will focus on Arrowmont's rich history, Appalachian culture and heritage, and the wonderful natural setting that the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer.  

  

If you are a member of Friends, tell the Arrowmont registrar when you register for a Legacy Weekend workshop. For Legacy Weekend workshops, Arrowmont will donate 25% of all tuition paid by Friends members back to Friends of the Smokies. You'll gain terrific craft skills and experience while supporting two of East Tennessee's most important institutions.

Every Wednesday in April- Get On the Trail with Friends & Missy-Spring 2014 brings another chance to Get On The Trail- Hike with us April 2nd (Quiet Walkway Adventure), 9th (Little River to Cucumber Gap), 16th (White Oak Sinks via Schoolhouse Gap), 23rd (Ramsey Cascades), and 30th (Indian Creek Loop).

Cost for each hike is $20 per person. Complimentary Friends of the Smokies membership with registration of the entire series.

April 8- Classic Hike to Newton Bald- Enjoy the Smokies in a riot of spring color on April's Classic Hike to Newton Bald. This hike is 10.5 miles and strenuous in difficulty with a total elevation gain of 2,800 feet. Reward yourself for the climb with beautiful views from Newton Bald and a rainbow of spring wildflowers. This hike features Friends' support of cultural protection projects in the Park and renovations at Mingus Mill. 

 

A $10 donation for Friends members and $35 for non-members is requested to benefit the Trails Forever Fund.

April 15-19- 64th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage- Download the gorgeous brochure for this historic event that features walks, talks, workshops, and entertainment in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Great for all ages and everyone who love the Smokies. Students sometimes get extra credit at school for participating, and it is a great opportunity for home-schoolers, too. Whether you're vacationing in the Smokies this spring, or are a local who has always wanted to learn more about the Park, this is your chance. It's about more than flowers! Register today

SmartBank Supports the Smokies = $22,787 Today
SmartBank Makes Annual Contribution to Friends + GSMA

SmartBank President and CEO, Billy Carroll, presented donation checks today to Friends of the Smokies President, Jim Hart and Great Smoky Mountains Association Executive Director, Terry Maddox totaling $22,787 from funds generated through the SmartBank SmartGreen Account.  Carroll stated, "It is truly an honor to partner with Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains Association with our SmartGreen Account.  The purpose of SmartGreen is to encourage environmental awareness as well as benefit the organizations that work so hard to help promote, maintain and protect our mountains." 

 
"We are very grateful to SmartBank for creating such a meaningful and lasting way to demonstrate their great love for the Smokies.  Their contributions to support Friends' work for the Park are just another example of the sincere commitment to the communities they serve," said Friends of the Smokies President, Jim Hart.
