19th Annual Telethon is August 15th

It's the only telethon that we know of for the benefit of a national park.  It also only lasts one hour.  That's not much time to stress how badly Great Smoky Mountains National Park needs your support.

All tax-deductible donations of $35+ come with an authentic Friends of the Smokies one-year membership card.  And every time you present your membership card at places like Dollywood and Mast General Store (hey- they are Telethon sponsors, too, by the way!), you will save money.

(For a complete list of membership discounts, click here)

The sixty-minute event broadcasts live on WBIR-TV in the Knoxville area and WLOS-TV for Asheville & beyond.  Tune in at 7:00 p.m., and have your phone handy; we want to keep our volunteers busy that night.

Maybe you don't live in the viewing area for WBIR or WLOS.  You can stream the broadcast live from WBIR's homepage that night at wbir.com .

If you have not already done so, you can give today to help us reach our goal.  Click the button below, or call us now at 800-845-5665 to have your gift counted in the success of the 19th Annual Friends Across the Mountains Telethon.

For the second consecutive year, we are proud to have the generous support of Dollywood, Mast General Store, and Pilot Flying J.  Their sponsorship means more kids will be educated through the Parks as Classrooms program, more eastern hemlocks will have a chance of escaping the devastation of the hemlock woolly adelgid, and important places in the Park like Cades Cove and Cataloochee  will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Take in the 360 degree views at the fire tower!

Friends of the Smokies invites hikers to take in the views
on a Classic Hike of the Smokies at the Mt. Sterling fire tower in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).

Hikers may join this guided hike up the Mt. Sterling Trail, exploring another entrance to the park along old NC 284.

This hike celebrates Friends of the Smokies' support for air quality initiatives in GSMNP.

On Tuesday, August 20th hiking expert, author of two regional hiking guide books (plus new book on her hike of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail), and Friend of the Smokies volunteer Danny Bernstein returns to lead this 5.4-mile hike. The hike is strenuous, steep, but short and has
a total ascent of 2,000 ft.
