Join Together for National Child Abuse Prevention Month

by Mallory Hyatt, Jeffco Human Services

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, a month committed to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. Abused and neglected children are part of the community and it will never be enough to intervene after abuse has occurred. Increased efforts to prevent abuse and raise awareness for the month of April include several activities, which allow all to become involved.

The state of Colorado is promoting such efforts through the "Be the One" Campaign. Time and time again we hear from adults who attribute their success to the "ONE" person who made a difference in shaping their futures. Every person in our community has a role to play in keeping our children safe, secure, and happy. You can Be the ONE to make a difference. To learn more visit www.ourkidsyourkids.org/betheonecolorado.

Jefferson County Human Services is joining the campaign. Throughout the county, pinwheel gardens will be displayed in honor of this month. Pinwheel gardens are part of a national effort to effect measurable change in the public's beliefs and behaviors regarding the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Pinwheels for Prevention is a national awareness group that helps communities all across the U.S. plant similar gardens to support the victims of child abuse.

In 2012, 7,957 referrals of abuse were reported in Jefferson County. The county constantly works to support families to ensure the safety of children, youth and families but cannot do it alone. Groups, organizations and individuals throughout the community are highly encouraged to get involved in this effort. If you witness child abuse or even suspect it may be happening please call and report it through the Child Abuse Hotline at 303-271-HELP.

Jefferson County Aging Well Launches 2011-2012 Annual Report

by Mallory Hyatt, Jeffco Human Services

Jefferson County has a rapidly changing landscape, with the largest number of adults age 60 and above in Colorado and that number is expected to double by the year 2030. For the past five years, Jefferson County's Strategic Plan for Aging Well has been exploring this aging population and recently launched the Aging Well in Jefferson County, Colorado 2011-2012 Annual Report. Read through the Aging Well Annual Report to get an overview of Aging Well accomplishments.

In the spring of 2008, Jefferson County Department of Human Services embarked on a large-scale strategic planning process titled "Aging Well." The project intent was to bring many stakeholders together to collaborate on how best the county could prepare for the projected doubling of the senior population during the next two decades. A consultant was hired to lead the project and the Human Services Department dedicated a staff person's time to work with the community to develop a 20-year strategic plan. Resources for carrying out the Aging Well Project were primarily provided by Jefferson County Department of Human Services and Rose Community Foundation.

The ultimate vision for all who have participated in this process is to see Jefferson County be a thriving community for aging well. Aging Well in Jefferson County has a mission to develop and implement strategies creating inclusive, livable communities through sustainable partnerships and integrated services.
