Silver Spring, MD - In its third year of giving back to the community, The Society Restaurant & Lounge will provide a 4-course meal to benefit displaced and transitioning members within the Silver Spring and Takoma Park, M.D. community on Thanksgiving Day - November 27, 2014. With over 1,000 homeless individuals, families and veterans within the community, Society understands the growing demands of providing dinner, coats and clothing for the hundreds that come each year to its restaurant to spend the Thanksgiving holiday.
Driven by its love of food, The Society Restaurant & Lounge in Silver Spring, M.D., believes in giving back to the community, not only during the Thanksgiving Holiday but throughout the year. Owner, Jason Miskiri, a native of Silver Spring and Takoma Park, and former NBA player - regularly donates his time and resources to local organizations whose missions seek to end hunger, homelessness and disenfranchisement. As a regular volunteer for Shepard's Table, St. Jude's Cancer Research Center, Montgomery County Food Bank, Sligo Creek Elementary School, Sligo Creek PTA, Manna Foods, Demon Brooks Foundation, City of Takoma Park Recreation Department, Y.E.S, Basketball Tournaments, NTBA Youth Basketball Exposure Tournaments, George Mason Alumni Chapter, and Silver Spring Homeless Shelter, Miskiri gives tirelessly in an effort to touch the lives of the people who walk past his restaurant each day.
"I grew up in this neighborhood, so I know the people, the culture and the responsibility of giving back to the community that raised me," says Miskiri. "Our community dinner is just one way that we give back. Our work is never done in supporting the community that we live, work and play in... it is our responsibility. It isn't just about providing a healthy home cooked meal - it is about giving our neighbors a place to spend the day without worry, without hunger and without judgment."
