A Fresh Start
Many of us use the turn of the calendar to make well-intentioned resolutions. Students often have similar feelings when beginning a new semester. It's a chance to start over, do better, stay healthy, and find balance.

But sometimes even with the best of intentions, students don't always know how to find support that can help lead to success. So this is a reminder of some WMU resources to share with your student for a positive and healthy semester.

The Academic Resource Center offers tutoring, college success seminars, writing assistance and overall academic support.

The Writing Center helps students to become better writers with one-on-one assistance, whatever the writing project.

If your student is having difficulties with an on-campus living situation, the housing staff is dedicated to helping resolve conflicts. Encourage your student to contact an RA or the residence hall office staff with any concerns.

Sindecuse Health Center, Counseling Services and the Student Affairs case manager are committed to supporting your student's good health and welfare.

And if you're not sure where to turn or how to advise your student, Parent and Family Programs is always here to help and get you connected with the appropriate person, department or resource.
New Student and Parent/Family Orientation
Sign up for Orientation begins on Feb. 2. There are 10 two-day sessions to choose from, beginning June 1. This program is required for incoming new students and highly recommended for all parents and family members...even if you have other children in college.

Housing Sign Up for Incoming Students
Housing sign up  for incoming students also begins on Feb. 2 at 9 a.m.

Flu Shots
It's not too late to get protection from the flu! Flu Shots are available for the first 100 students at no cost. Students can make an appointment online or by calling (269) 387-3287.
Financial Considerations

It is officially time for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and ALL students should complete their 2016-17 FAFSA. There is no cutoff deadline but some funds are awarded until they are gone, so apply by the March 1 priority deadline.

Why should you complete the FAFSA if your family doesn't qualify for "free" money?
  • The FAFSA is often required if you are applying for other forms of financial aid.
  •  It's free and it's easier than ever before to complete.
  • If your circumstances change during the year that affect your financial situation, having a FAFSA on file can expedite an appeal and help reduce anxiety during a stressful time.
Get FREE help with your FAFSA at College Goal Sunday in February. Dates and locations are on the website. Financial aid experts will be available to guide students and their families through each step of completing and filing the FAFSA. Students under 23 years of age are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian and should bring the following information:
  • FAFSA PIN (Personal Identification Number)
  • Driver's License
  • Parents' income and financial statements
  • Parents' tax information
  • Social security number and parents' social security numbers
WMU endowed scholarship applications are available online. The deadline is Feb. 16 and some scholarships require your FAFSA to be complete. Don't miss out on free money for college!

Are you a WMU alum? If so, encourage your student to apply for a Legacy Scholarship. Eligibility and application requirements are available on the Legacy Scholarship website. The deadline is Feb. 1, 2016.
