 Back-Up Child Care
Back-up child care is the perfect solution to those times when things don't go exactly as planned. Pre-register your child and when a need arises, just call the Center to reserve a back-up care slot. Back-up care is provided on a space available basis, so call as soon as you know you need care.
Examples of when back-up care is useful:
- Snow day
- Teacher in-service day
- Time needed beyond your child's normal schedule
- An unexpected meeting or a study group for class
- Your normal child care provider is unable to provide care
Back-up care is not drop-in care. You must pre-register and call ahead to reserve a back-up care slot. |

Family Style Dining
Our preschool will soon begin serving meals Family Style. Family Style Dining is designed to more closely resemble the way children eat when at home with their family. Children serve themselves with or without the help of the teachers. Teachers sit with the children and enjoy pleasant conversation.
By serving themselves, children are learning how to select an appropriate portion size. Children have the tendency to take more than they can eat. Teachers will help children select an appropriate portion size and offer an opportunity for a second serving if appropriate.
In addition to children enjoying the independence of Family Style Dining, they are also learning important skills, such as, taking turns and patience, pouring and scooping, and a positive attitude toward food.
Focus questions for the week: "How do we make and keep friends?" and "How can we be part of a group?"

Favorite Stories
Just like adults, toddlers have stories they love to read again and again. While it may seem redundant to adults to read the same story repetitively, multiple exposures to the same literature offer an abundance of pre-literacy support for young children.
The Creative Curriculum approach introduces children to the characters of a story and the internal conflict even before the book is read. The first read gives us chances to expand vocabulary as we point to pictures, use gestures, and dramatize the story. We also wonder aloud, and ask follow-up questions. The second read is an opportunity to recall the characters and the problem, and reinforce some previously introduced words and concepts. On subsequent readings, children are guided to reconstruct the story while the teachers turn the pages, asking questions such as "What is happening here?" or "What happens next?".
In the Toddler Room, we are learning to retell some of our favorite tales using props and puppets to engage in the story. Retelling stories greatly improves children's reading comprehension and vocabulary, and helps children become more engaged in the reading process. This technique encourages children to think critically about the story and gives them opportunities to articulate their thoughts. Having concrete materials, like puppets, to manipulate during this process also allows children the creativity to develop stories and situations on their own.
