Campus Safety

Encourage your student to be mindful of personal safety and take advantage of our on-campus student escort service available nightly. Students can call (269) 387-RIDE (7433) for an escort (vehicle or walking) so they don't need to travel around campus alone.

WMU Alert
Students should sign up to receive emergency notification information via text message and/or phone call through their GoWMU account home page. It's a quick and easy way to stay informed and safe.

Things to know...

Student Right to Privacy

FERPA  (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) grants students the right to restrict the release of directory information which includes:

  • name
  • address
  • telephone number
  • WMU e-mail address
  • curriculum and major
  • dates of attendance
  • enrollment status (full/part-time)
  • degrees/awards received
  • most recent previous education agency or institution attended by the student
  • participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • weight/height of members of athletic teams
At WMU students have two options for privacy. They can elect to restrict their address and phone number from being released for publication or choose to not have any directory information given out. Students wishing to invoke their right to privacy need to complete a request form available on the Registrar's Office website under the "Student Privacy" link.

Students considering restricting the release of directory information should be advised of some possible unintended consequences.  For instance, a FERPA restriction makes it difficult for potential employers to verify enrollment or degree information.  A student would also be excluded from appearing in the commencement program or on the Dean's list.  Students can submit a "Revoke Privacy Form" at any time if they wish to remove their name from the privacy list.

To facilitate and encourage dialogue between students and their families, WMU offers two ways in which student information can be shared with parents, guardians, or family members:

WMU has a system in place which allows a student to give another individual  authorized user access to view certain academic and financial aid information through the student information system. Access to this information is restricted to what is available in the system and to what has been authorized by the student. In addition, students can choose to sign a waiver allowing a faculty or staff member to discuss their records with parents. In both cases, the choice to grant access belongs to the student and the student has the right to revoke this access at any time.
