DRI's Professional Practices: Tell Us What You Think With This Survey!

null What are your views on DRI International's Professional Practices? We want to hear them! The DRI International Commission's Professional Practices Committee is seeking comments from DRI Certified Professionals on the current edition of the Professional Practices, via this brief 11-question survey.

Before taking the survey, log into your MyDRI account (or create a free profile if you don't have one already) to review the Professional Practices, focusing on those areas you believe may need updating and revising. Then provide your suggestions and revisions via the survey, which will remain open until December 31, 2014.

The Professional Practices Committee of the DRI Commission is responsible for maintaining the DRI Professional Practices. In order to accomplish this, the committee uses a four-year update cycle that has been adopted by the DRI Commission and is currently underway.

This survey is part of the review cycle. Survey results will be used to create a new version of the Professional Practices, which will then be made available for comment. At the conclusion of the comment period, a final version will be published.

Cost of a Quake for Wine Country: $1 billion?

It's even worse than a bull in a china shop -- an earthquake approaching an industry made up of glass bottles and wooden shelves!

The August 24 earthquake that hit northern California caused damages and injuries that may cost Napa Valley as much as $1 billion overall -- but the cost to the region's wineries may well be incalculable.

Napa Valley produces 17% of the nation's wine, and is home to many prized vintages -- which were claimed by the 6.0 quake, impossible to replace.

Other staggering losses:

The Laird Family Estate lost enough wine to fill a swimming pool.
Napa Barrel Care -- which stores wine for five wineries -- had 100 barrels (equivalent of about 300 bottles of wine) fall off shelves, crashing to the ground.
Three barrels of wine at Silver Oak Winery were damaged, costing an estimated $100,000 of a premier vintage.

There is one bit of good news amid all the quake damage, though: the grapes for this year's bottles remained on the vines, ensuring 2014 won't be a scarce year, known as a rare vintage, in the future!

DRI in the Community -- Upcoming Events

The DRI Foundation is partnering with the communities where we work for a couple of upcoming events we wanted to share!

First up is the Detroit Prepare Fair, part of FEMA's PrepArathon program. On Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., DRI's Michigan office team, the Michigan State Police, and other organizations will be on hand to teach the community the importance of emergency preparedness. Participants will get to meet local first responders, explore emergency response vehicles, receive free preparedness items, and more!

DRI's New York office also is participating in New York's Ready Red Hook Day on Sept. 13, which will feature fun, prizes, and Community Response Plan Practice activities. We'll have more about these events in a future issue of DRIVE!

Awards of Excellence Nominations: Hear From a Past Winner

And it's not just private organizations that are recognized. Those working in the public sector are honored too, with the award for Program Leader of the Year (Public) -- for the professional who has improved the capabilities of his or her community by championing operational resilience.

2014's winner was the New York City Office of Emergency Management's Ira Tannenbaum, who pulled off a double-win: the Program Leader of the Year (Public) award for him, as well as the Team of the Year award for the NYCOEM's COOP team!

Speaking about working in the public sector, Tannenbaum said, "Although we don't necessarily have shareholders and we're not worried about our stock price, we are focused on life safety, and we can't afford to have a moment down. So business continuity, or continuity of operations, for us is critical to our daily existence."
