CEOs Might Want to Hide Their Risk Management Report Cards

Did you ever get a bad report card in school -- one you desperately wanted to hide from the world? Now CEOs have been graded on their risk management commitment, and if this were still school, a lot of them would definitely get grounded.

Cybersecurity website Dark Reading posted a survey asking respondents to rate their CEO's commitment to better cybersecurity and lowering cyber-risk. About 750 responses later, here's what the Risk Management Report Card looked like:

A - Top Priority: 16%

B - Moving in the right direction, but lacking critical tools - 26%

C - Meeting minimum compliance regs, just barely - 21%

D - Flying blind - our tools are outdated and we need more support and training - 19%

F - Epic Fail - We're an open target for attack - 19%

It seems some top execs still aren't getting the message that security isn't a cost -- it's an investment. That's where DRI's new Risk Management for the Business Continuity Professional course comes in. Whether you're new to the RM field or a seasoned professional, DRI offers training and certification that can help you develop a strong risk management program within your organization.

CDC Offers New Flu Vaccine Resource Kit

12-6 Drive FLU Pic The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is getting ahead of flu season with a new resource kit, as part of its National Influenza Vaccination Disparities Partnership initiative.

Described as a "national multi-sector campaign," the goal is to promote the importance of flu vaccination among underserved populations.

For instance: Only 33.8% of Hispanic adults have ever received a flu vaccination, and 35.6% of African Americans -- two populations at increased risk of developing serious flu-related complications.

To raise awareness, the kit provides information on:

  • promoting flu vaccinations in the community
  • learning the facts about influenza -- and vaccinations
  • sharing success stories
  • participating in National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 7-14).
  • and more.

Update: U.S. Ports May Avoid Strikes

Some potential good news at the 29 ports along the U.S. West Coast: labor negotiations are set to resume Aug. 4 to head off a strike -- one that could cost the U.S. economy more than $2 billion a day.

About 20,000 dock workers have continued to work since their contracts expired July 1, as the union and maritime associations negotiate over salaries and health care.

Both sides have characterized previous talks as "productive," which is a good sign. A work stoppage of 10 days (the length of the last one in 2002) could cost $7.1 billion in lost exports!

Since the West Coast ports are responsible for almost half of all U.S. maritime trade -- including 70% from Asia -- some companies are putting contingency plans in place, such as relying on ports in Canada and Mexico or shipping merchandise earlier.

Fingers crossed that the talks lead to new agreements and nobody has to see what a major disruption in the supply line looks like!

We'll keep you posted.

White Paper: Managing Risk in the Supply Chain

Image_Metrics and RiskWhat's your organization's strategy for identifying and managing the risks that face your supply chain? Whatever it is, it might not be sufficient, according to a new white paper by UPS Capital

The paper brought in data from 150 supply chain executives, and the findings were surprising. Among them:

  • 90% do not quantify risk when outsourcing production
  • 66% have risk managers in their firms, usually in legal or compliance -- but virtually all of them ignore supply chain risk
  • None of them use outside expertise to assess risk for their supply chains, and
  • 100% acknowledged insurance as a highly effective mitigation tool, but also said it wasn't on their radar or part of their purview.

Why is that? Said one interviewee: "Frankly, my boss isn't asking me to look at [risk]. It's the right thing to do, but we aren't rewarded for it." In other words, there needs to be more incentive to tackle supply chain risk.

The UPS paper examines these issues, and also provides possible risk management processes for companies of all sizes. Click here to read the entire paper.

SHARKNADOES Aren't Possible...Right?

There's a severe weather event going on this week that you probably haven't thought to prepare for: a second SHARKNADO!

Yes, SyFy's incredibly popular guilty pleasure has gotten a sequel, once again causing viewers to cautiously ask, "Wait, a tornado made of sharks couldn't ACTUALLY happen -- could it?"

Well...possibly? While your odds of having to fight off flying sharks are pretty slim (so you can go ahead and put down that chainsaw), there are reports of similar instances have happened in the past, as groups of animals get sucked up into tornadoes, such as:
  • Fish -- as recently as 2012 in Agusan del Sur, when dozens of 3-inch-long mudfish fell from the sky
  • Frogs -- 2005 in the Serbian town of Odzaci, where the frogs reportedly survived and hopped along their merry way
  • Worms -- "clumps" of them fell on Jennings, Louisiana in 2007, and perhaps most terrifying of all...
  • Alligators -- if this 1897 report is to be believed, at least!
So, how DOES one prepare for a sharknado, anyway? With a rousing speech from the film's star, Ian Zierling:
