Update: DRI Foundation's Partnership With Habitat for Humanity Philippines

After Typhoon Haiyan-Yolanda tore through the Philippines in November 2013, the DRI Foundation teamed up with Habitat for Humanity Philippines (HFHP) to help rebuild the lives of those affected.

The process is long and arduous, but work is now underway: 98 core homes are under construction, and 9 have been completed!

HBHP has also partnered with the National Housing Authority, who has agreed to match the numbers of houses HFHP will build. Other local government units have also committed to develop location sites for houses to be built.

But there's much more work to be done. In fact, 85% of the houses still need funds raised in order to achieve the 30,000 target, and move families still housed in tents and makeshift homes into true houses. To find out how you can help, visit the newly redesigned website of the DRI Foundation.

Catastrophe Recap: Summer of Hailstorms

4-12 Drive STORM PicAmong the more dangerous natural disasters to affect businesses, hail damage cost organizations over $2.75 billion USD in June!

That's just one of the findings from the most recent Global Catastrophe Recap, collected by insurance risk group Aon Benfield.

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms in Western and Central Europe resulted in residential and automobile hail damage, and even killed six. This is actually the second consecutive summer marked by serious hail damage in Europe. Last year, it resulted in $4 billion USD in insurance claims.

In the U.S., a week-long event led to significant hail, straight-line wind, and flash flood damage across parts of the Midwest,
Plains, Rockies, Southwest, and the Tennessee Valley, killing three. Softball-sized hail and winds gusting beyond 90 mph led to economic damages totaling roughly $850 million.

Elsewhere:

  • Tropical Storm Boris hit Mexico and Guatamala with heavy rains and 65-mph winds.
  • An overflowing Parana River led to flooding in Paraguay, where 75,000 people were evacuated near the capital of Asuncion. In Argentina, floods caused residential and infrastructure damages listed in excess of $62 million USD.
  • Torrential rainfall in the Nigerian city of Ibadan left 15 people dead after the Olodo River burst its banks. Resulting floods also swept away bridges and critical infrastructure.
  • Days of torrential rainfall inundated southern sections of China. A combined 74,000 homes were damaged or destroyed as more than 1.25 million people were evacuated, while 296,500 acres of cropland submerged, decimating the infrastructure was decimated.

You can download a complete copy of the recap here.

Survey: DDoS Attacks Are Crippling Capabilities

2-29 Drive CYBER PicHas your organization been hit with a Direct Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in the past year? If so, you're far from alone.

41% of global organizations reported suffering a DDoS attack, with 78% saying they'd been targeted twice or more, according to a recent survey.

DDoS attacks work by overloading an organization's system or server, jamming it with so many communications requests that legitimate traffic can't get through.

Adding to the headache: DDoS attacks equal customer complaints (which jump 36% after an attack) and downtime, taking an average 12 hours for organizations to recover -- longer than the actual business day itself.

On the upside, the threat is now clear enough that organizations know they have to take action. 59% of those surveyed named DDoS a key concern.

You can download the complete white paper here.

Hurricane Evacuation: There's An App for That

One of the toughest decisions to make in an emergency is knowing when it's time to evacuate. But a new computer program could make the decision a little easier.

A program called the Hurricane Evacuation Encouragement Demonstrator (HEED) has been developed by designers at Old Dominion University for Virginia's Department of Emergency Management. Its purpose: to alert residents and tourists of southeastern Virginia to evacuate in the event of major storm.

Users can type in their home address and view an animated video of what they may experience if they don't evacuate. If a person lives in an area where no major impact is expected, a video won't be available. For those already on the road, they can use their phone's GPS to find the best route.

It also provides:

  • customized evacuation routes
  • updated storm tracks, and
  • information about emergency shelters and service stations along the evacuation route.

Right now, the program's only available to Virginia residents. But it's only a matter of time before other hurricane-prone areas develop similar alert programs to spread the word about emergencies.
