Just Announced: DRI2014's New Supply Chain Keynote Speaker from Georgia Tech!

We're pleased to announce our keynote speaker for DRI2014's Supply Chain TrackChelsea (Chip) White III, PhD, Schneider National Chair in Transportation and Logistics at Georgia Tech!

White has been a keynote speaker at a variety of international conferences and events, including the Council on Competitiveness and the Brookings Institution on the impact of information technology on international freight distribution, security, and productivity.

His current research interests focus on analyzing the role of real-time information and enabling information technology for improved logistics, supply chain productivity and risk mitigation, particularly in the U.S. trucking industry.

In his Supply Chain Track keynote address, White will talk about crisis management and supply chain, as well as trends in supply chain that will be important to all business continuity professionals.

Catch a Ride with the Goodyear Blimp!

Make plans to attend the DRI Foundation Auction Benefit on Tuesday, May 20, and you could join an elite club of aerial travelers!

Goodyear has provided two ride certificates for its world-famous Goodyear Blimps at any of three locations (Carson, CA, Pompano Beach, FL, and Akron, OH).

The experience is not readily available to the public, but Goodyear has generously donated certificates that will allow the bidder to accommodate five people in the blimp. (Travel accommodations will be the bidder's responsibility.)

Make a serious bid for these tickets at the auction -- this could be your only opportunity to obtain this bucket list item!

Survey: Threats to International Supply Chains

Supply chain failure ranks as the primary threat to U.S. and Canadian businesses as they expand their operations overseas, according to a survey by Chubb Group of Insurance Companies

The top threats, based on the responses of 300 senior execs:

  • Supply chain failure (19%)
  • Data breach/cyber event (15%)
  • Government/regulatory investigation and political instability (tied at 13%), and
  • Natural catastrophe (12%).

But more worrying is what those companies plan -- or don't plan -- to do about their biggest concerns. Only 56% of these businesses have a continuity plan in place that addresses overseas supply chain risks, and 22% of those have never actually tested it! For more, click here.

And don't miss the DRI2014 Supply Chain Track, which will help business continuity pros respond to some of the biggest threats facing international businesses.

What's the Real Cost of Data Breaches?

2-29 Drive CYBER Pic Protecting your data is a major priority, which is why you should make time to attend Cyber Security for Improved Resilience Against Threats, our DRI2014 session with Deloitte's Damian Walch. It could save your company $3.5 million!

That's the estimate put forth via a study by the Ponemon Group, which says the average cost of a corporate data breach increased 15% in the past year. Put another way, that's a loss of $145 per each stolen or lost record.

While malicious attacks and criminal attacks are the most common cause of a breach, other causes occur depending on region. For instance, while losses in Germany and Arabian regions were most likely to be criminal, system glitches and business process errors were common in India. Brazil and the U.K.'s most common cause? Human error.

Here's the good news: The involvement of business continuity management reduced the costs of a breach by about $9 per record!

April's Global Severe Weather Damage, Recapped

4-12 Drive STORM Pic They say April is the cruelest month -- and looking at the latest Global Catastrophe Recap, it's hard to argue.

According to Impact Forecasting, a multi-day outbreak of severe weather and flash flooding in the U.S. will be the first billion-dollar economic loss of the year due to heavy thunderstorms, while damage tornadoes, hail (particularly hailstones the size of golf balls in the Denton, TX metro area), and damaging winds resulted in losses of $950 million!

In China, four separate stretches of severe thunderstorms resulted in nine deaths and damage to more than 40,000 homes and thousands of hectares in crops, at an estimated cost of $1 billion USD.

A powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Chile, causing damage and spawning a small tsunami. Seven people were killed and 13,000 homes damaged as a result. (For more on how the area responded, look for our article in the upcoming issue of THRIVE!)

To see all the areas impacted in April , read the complete Recap here.
