Networking at DRI2014...and Beyond!

The DRI2014 Conference on May 18-21 in Atlanta is the premier networking event for business continuity professionals, and we've got two unique opportunities for you to meet with colleagues and share ideas.

First up: Get face-time with representatives of some of the top companies and experts in the business continuity at the BC Solutions Exchange on Monday, May 19 at 11:45.

You'll get the chance to sit in on your choice of round-table discussions, as vendors will join in with attendees on an exchange of ideas on issues, trends, and solutions that are most important to the participants. Each exchange will break up after 15 minutes, allowing you to participate in multiple discussions.

Then on Tuesday, May 20 at 11:45 in the Exhibit Hall, join the Business Continuity Issues and Answers Round Table. Each table will address issues important to you and your colleagues, including:
  • Supply Chain
  • Risk Management
  • Communications Challenges
  • Senior Management Support
  • Cloud and IT/DR
  • Educating Employees
  • Standards
  • Cyber-security (sponsored by Deloitte)
  • Regional Disasters
  • Public/Private Partnerships, and
  • Workforce Continuity.
Want to discuss something that's not on the list? Click here to tell us what additional subjects you want to see covered. We'll make sure there are tables that suit your interests, and create an open dialogue where you can get to know your fellow conference-goers and exchange valuable ideas.

Getting the most out of networking means more than just a good handshake. Here are some good rules of thumb:

Prep your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is an easy way to build a contact list during a conference. Make sure your profile shows off blurred-business-shake.jpg your good side by posting a professional name and photo, an easy-to-read (and remember) customized URL, and regular, relevant status updates.

Make a good introduction. To make your first meeting with a new contact land, be the one to make the introduction (it's a sign of respect), speak slowly and clearly -- especially in a noisy room -- and don't overwhelm them with personal details.

Use tricks to remember names. You're going to meet a lot of people, and it's not always easy to keep all those names straight in your head. Try repeating their name early and often (but not so often that it gets annoying!), associate their names with a detail about them ("Fred likes to fish"), or simply jot down their name and where you met down on the back of your business card so it's handy.

Cybersecurity Threats: Are You Prepared?

2-15 Drive CYBER Pic Are you on top of your game in the area of cybersecurity? Because it's about to get even more complicated, as lawyers warn that regulatory enforcement could lead to serious fines for unprepared organizations!

The Securities Exchange Commission and other regulatory agencies recently recommended BC and IT professionals brush up on their cybersecurity "sweeps," focusing on:

  • Information technology risk assessment
  • Business continuity plans in the event of a cyber-incident
  • Organizational structures and reporting lines
  • Sharing and evaluating cyber threat information
  • Recent cybersecurity breaches and their consequences
  • Responding to denial of service attacks
  • Cybersecurity training
  • Cybersecurity insurance, and
  • Vendor contracts.

Fortunately, DRI2014 has you covered, with a session that directly hits on this issue. Come to "Cybersecurity For Increased Resilience Against Threats" on Monday, May 19 at 2:15, and learn how organizations can build security and resilience into their processes, by examining the anatomy of a cyber-incident. The session is led by Damian Walch, a Director in Deloitte's Cyber Risk Services practice, and he's sure to give you the tools you need to protect against cyber threats!

Risk Management Lessons From the Polar Vortex

2-1 Drive SNOW Pic Were you hoping to pack away your memories of this past winter's Polar Vortex, along with your bulky sweaters and snow pants? Not so fast! Its effects offer some important lessons on Risk Management -- one of the two dedicated educational tracks featured at DRI2014 on May 20 in Atlanta.

Matt Simmons, Vice President of Risk Management and Chief Risk Officer at electricity company PPL Corp., discussed the event with the Wall Street Journal, calling it "a black swan event, relatively low probability, but high impact," that went beyond the industry-standard stress-testing parameters.

Among its effects on utilities providers:

  • Many gas plants across the region couldn't cope with the cold weather
  • Some plants were unable to convert to backup fuels
  • Gas transmission pipelines stopped working due to compressor problems
  • Frozen coal piles at coal plants, and
  • Scarcity of electricity due to inoperable generators, at a time of record demand.

So what lessons were learned? Simmons points to improving communication with suppliers, diversifying fuel sources, performing extreme-event stress tests in addition to normal testing, and preparing for peak periods in both summer and winter.

For more, make sure to hit all our Risk Management track sessions: our expert keynote address, panel discussion, pre-lunch roundtable discussion, and afternoon work group!

Are You Prepared? FEMA Wants to Know.

Now that we're done with the Polar Vortex, here comes Spring -- and along with it, a brand-new season of potential natural disasters.

With America's PrepareAthon, FEMA is urging everyone to "Be Smart, Take Part, Prepare!" as it builds to a National Day of Action on April 30.

On that day, organizations and communities can promote preparedness and resilience through emergency drills, group discussions, exercises and other activities related to recognizing the risks and staying safe in the event of:
Participants can find activities in their area throughout the month on the PrepareAthon's event calendar. Register to take part in the Day of Action by clicking here!

Pushing for Stronger Healthcare Continuity? Check Out This DRI2014 Session

two_doctors.jpg Particularly at risk in the event of a hurricane, flood or other natural disaster: healthcare agencies.

The Department of Health and Human Services even calls it an "urgent public health issue," and is proposing new requirements to help facilities better cope when disaster strikes.

One of factor that's been shown to mitigate costs and benefit healthcare agencies in emergency situations: effective training. In many worst-case scenarios -- such as Superstorm Sandy and the wildfires in the western U.S. -- it's the actions of professionals trained in emergency management best practices that have helped save lives and limit damage, keeping facilities operational when they're needed most.

At his DRI2014 session "A Business Case for Healthcare Continuity," Dennis Schrader, a healthcare continuity consultant and former Deputy Administrator of the National Preparedness Directorate at FEMA, will break down the key trends and business issues influencing healthcare preparedness planning, including:
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Risk management and patient safety
  • Revenue disruption
  • Impact analysis
  • Accreditation processes and costs, and
  • Cost avoidance.
Attendees will also get to hear about real-life case studies and the lessons we can all draw from them. So mark your schedule for Monday, May 19 at 10:30 to attend this vital session!

Boston Marathon Security: By the Numbers

This year's Boston Marathon on April 21 took no chances in emergency prep. To ensure the safety and health of the 36,000+ attendees, the city implemented a huge array of safety and security measures, including:
  • Increased uniformed and undercover police presence -- over 400 combined
  • Over 100 cameras and 50 observation points
  • A dedicated text number to report suspicious activity
  • 13 ambulances stationed along the marathon route to support the 24 roaming ambulances
  • 144 EMS personnel on the route
  • A 30-bed ambulance bus ready for deployment, and
  • 2 emergency operations centers coordinating communications among personnel.
