Coming Soon: DRI's New International Glossary!

DRI International is proud to announce the upcoming release of the International Glossary for Resiliency, a new language guide designed to improve communications and increase clarity across the business continuity community.

A volunteer committee of industry leaders gathered to review 2,189 unique terms from 22 different reference documents, and voted on the standard set of terms and definitions that would be featured in the glossary.

After nearly two years, DRI can finally present the results of that work: a common set of universal terms that will reduce confusion, remove inconsistencies, and facilitate coordination between parties.

"When we were asked to offer a DRI glossary, we took on the challenge," said Chloe Demrovsky, DRI Managing Director of Global Operations. "We expect that this will be a living document, subject to revisions and changes from the community as we work to achieve our goal of uniformity in the industry."

On March 14, the International Glossary for Resiliency will be made available to everyone simply by logging onto MyDRI (https://drii.org/crm/login.php) and downloading the PDF file. You do not need to be a DRI-certified professional to create a free MyDRI profile -- our glossary is available to everyone!

What's in a Word? Follow DRI to Find Out!

As we get closer to glossary launch day, be sure to check out our social media sites (Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter) for a fun series of posts on the weird words, odd definitions and strange phrases that make language lively (and sometimes, very confusing)! Some might even be useful in your professional life, like utuqaq.  Read on to find out what it means!

For instance:

Some words fall out of favor over time. But that doesn't mean we can't bring them back! Sprinkle these obscure gems into your daily conversations, maybe they'll catch on:

Groak - To silently watch someone while they are eating, hoping to be invited to join them ("I'm trying to enjoy my lunch, but that guy at the next table keeps groaking at me!")

Crapulous - To feel ill because of excessive eating or drinking ("I had a blast at Marv's party last night, but boy do I feel crapulous today.")

Jargogle - To confuse ("I told my son you can park in a driveway and drive on a parkway, and it completely jargogled him!")

Of course, some words fall out of common use for a good reason. When's the last time you would have used ...

Abicinate - To blind someone using red-hot metal

Batrachophagous - One who eats frogs

Fabiform - In the shape of a bean, or

Mallemaroking - Drinking heavily on a Greenlandic whaling ship that's stuck in ice?

That's just English words we don't use. Inuit speakers, on the other hand, have an overabundance of
frequently-used words --
especially when it comes to snow and ice, such as:

Matsaaruti - wet snow that can be used to ice a sleigh's runners

Pukak - Crystalline powder snow that looks like salt

Utuqaq - ice that lasts year after year (Those of us hit hard by winter storms this year will surely adopt this one!)

Siguliaksraq - the patchwork layer of crystals that forms as the sea begins to freeze

We'll have more wordplay for you every day leading up to the launch of the glossary, so follow our Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter feeds!

Download This Free BCP Audit Whitepaper!

"The only way to determine whether your preparedness program meets the needs of your company is an audit."  So says Don Schmidt, an industry expert and DRI instructor, whose article (click here to read it) will make you go from worrying about an audit to wanting to conduct one...or more!

But don't just read Don's article. Attend his class! Don will be teaching DRI's ANSI-accredited Business Continuity Planning for Auditors course March 17-20 in Baltimore, MD.
Why do you need to audit your program?  Perhaps, customers are asking for proof that you can deliver no matter what? Maybe you need to know if your program is compliant with regulatory requirements? Maybe you're preparing for an outside audit? Or, is it that you need to be sure that your program can and will work when put to the test?
Clearly, audit is important. But it's also complex, and it's a skill that must be learned and applied in very specific ways. Our ANSI-accredited Business Continuity for Auditors course teaches students how to audit a program in a hands-on, content-rich format that is both engaging and empowering! And successfully completing the course is the first step in becoming a DRI Certified Business Continuity Auditor (CBCA) or Lead Auditor (CBCLA).
DRI audit training covers relevant standards, laws and regulations, the process of risk assessment, vulnerability analysis, loss prevention, risk mitigation, as well as the development, implementation, testing and maintenance of emergency management and business continuity plans and procedures. Course materials reflect existing legal and regulatory requirements, as well as various standards.
To find out more about our audit courses, call (866) 542-3744 or email us at driinfo@drii.org.
