DRI Foundation Black Friday Volunteer Day Delivers Aid to Illinois Farmers

A team of DRI Foundation volunteers gave new meaning to the phrase "raking it in" as they cleared an acre of tornado-ravaged Illinois farmland, collecting debris on a day that's usually all about collecting cash.

Rakes in hand, 14 volunteers led by DRI Foundation Board Director Pete Renneker, assisted Washington, IL farmers by clearing debris from their land in preparation for the spring planting season. These farmers not only have homes, barns, and equipment to replace, but also businesses to rebuild in the wake of the devastating tornadoes that hit the area on November 17. Debris left to freeze over the winter would have ruined attempts to plow and farm the land in the spring, thus jeopardizing their livelihood.

"We had 14 volunteers show up and clear about an acre of land, with nothing other than rakes and elbow grease," Renneker said.  "An acre of land seems like nothing when you look at the size of the farm, but the farmers were very thankful that the DRI Foundation was able to give them a good start on the daunting task ahead. The day was cold and raking debris all day is not easy work, but in the end, we got a great start on cleaning up the finer debris that the big farm equipment is not able to move."

The DRI Foundation provided water, Gatorade, donuts, work gloves, and winter hats for volunteers.  And they earned one CEAP for every hour they worked.

Volunteers were rallied in just two days, and Renneker called the effort "a great turnout for short notice on a holiday weekend." We think it's a great example of the DRI Foundation at work, as well as a testament to the caring and sharing nature of business continuity professionals.

Get Your Hands Dirty for a Good Cause:
Sign Up Today for the DRI2014 Volunteer Day!
3-8 Drive SMILE Pic-1-2 With half- and full-day options to choose from, we've got the volunteer activity to fit your schedule and skill set, and earn you some CEAPs!  Don't wait.  Sign up today for our DRI2014 Volunteer Day on May 17 in Atlanta, GA, and spend some time doing good in an organic community garden, at a food bank, or on a construction project.

How Does Their Garden Grow?

With your help, of course! Truly Living Well is a community organic garden and a Volunteer Day partner organization.  Truly Living Well's mission is to "grow better communities by connecting people with the land through education, training, and demonstration of economic success in natural urban agriculture."

The organization is a nationally-recognized leader in natural urban agriculture, demonstrating  "sustainable and economically viable solutions for helping people to eat and live better."

This volunteer opportunity will run from four to five hours and include a variety of gardening tasks within the four-acre garden.  There are spots open for 20 volunteers; green thumb not required!

Eat, Drink, and Be Wary!

When food needs to be inspected after it's donated, where does it go? To the Atlanta Community Food Bank's Product Rescue Center! And there's no way they could inspect, sort and pack all that food without volunteers.

Food Bank trucks pick up goods from food drives, grocery stores, and manufacturers, and drop them off at the Product Rescue Center every day. A team DRI2014 volunteers will inspect, sort and pack these goods. This area of operation is crucial as it ensures that retail, salvage and food drive donations will be safe and wholesome for distribution to people in need.  We can welcome two teams of up to 40 vigilant volunteers for this three-hour hands-on opportunity.

It's Hammer Time!

If you're interested in a more labor-intensive experience, then no other volunteer opportunity can touch this!  Join a team of up to 30 DRI2014 volunteers for a day of home construction. We've yet to put the finishing touches on this opportunity, so we can't officially announce the partner organization today, but rest assured we'll be ready to put you to work!

Sign up for DRI2014 Volunteer Day when you register for the DRI2014 conference here.  Be sure to sign up right away to reserve your volunteer spot (they always fill up fast!) and to take advantage of our early bird discount.
