A New Kind of Conference: DRI2014 Offers In-Depth, Sustainable Learning and Networking

Looking for a chance to really dig in, learn something new, network in a meaningful, sustainable way with experienced professionals, and hear from true subject matter experts?  Tired of going to conferences and settling for one nugget of useful information as the pay off?  Well, here's your chance to do something different!  Come to DRI2014, May 18-21 in Atlanta, GA, and delve deep into innovative, interactive tracks on supply chain and enterprise risk management, attend a wide variety of panel discussions, and hit the mother lode, not just a nugget!

DRI2014 features two integrated tracks with key educational elements that will enable interaction among attendees and the track speakers before, during, and after the conference. Tracks are in supply chain and risk management, and each includes a keynote address, panel discussion, work group session, pre-conference survey, and post-conference follow-up.  Track sessions are scheduled consecutively.  Supply Chain is Monday, May 19, and Risk Management is Tuesday, May 20.  Attendees do not have to attend all three sessions in the track but are encouraged to do so.  If you have questions about the tracks or the conference program, call (866) 542-3744. For the complete conference program, click here. To register now at our early bird rate of $1195, click here.

In addition to the outstanding program, you won't want to miss Volunteer Day, which will be held Saturday May 17, 2014. Volunteer Day will provide you with the chance to give back via one of our full-day or half-day options.  Projects will include construction, gardening, and working in a food bank.  Be sure to sign up early as space is limited and Volunteer Day is always filled to capacity.

You'll also have the chance to visit with vendors.  The exhibit hall is an integral part of DRI2014, and the products and services portion of the event is much more than a sales pitch.  The Solutions Exchange, which was a big hit last year, returns in 2014 so that product and service providers and attendees can mingle on a more meaningful level.

And be sure to join us for another DRI Awards of Excellence gala dinner and ceremony, on May 19, as the best and brightest in business continuity are recognized by their peers.  It'll be a fun night!
Costa Rica Conference Rich in Information, Ideas

DRI International traveled to Costa Rica this week for the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Conference Monday and Tuesday. Conference attendees had the opportunity to hear DRI President Al Berman's speech on trends in supply chain risk mitigation. Berman is a former Global Practice Leader with PwC and was able to use this opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues. DRI Director of Global Operations, Chloe Demrovsky, applied the principles from Berman's speech to the case study of the Rama Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh and how it is changing the way companies manage third-party risks.

Other topics at the conference included exploring global trends and case studies in business continuity. The themes of the conference included, crisis communications, the transition from the BS25999 to the ISO 22301 as well as cloud computing and its relationship to business continuity. Director of Global Operations, tweeted stating that there was, "Good dialogue about ISO22301 at PwC Costa Rica's Seminario Internacional de Continuidad de Negocio".

Don't miss the opportunity to keep up on what's happening with PwC's events, right here. You can also find out what conference DRI will be at next, right here on our News section

A Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On: Participate in The Great Shakeout on 10/17!

At 10:17 a.m. on October 17, 2013, millions of people worldwide will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" in The Great ShakeOut, the world's largest earthquake drill ever! All businesses are encouraged to participate in the drill (or plan a more extensive exercise) and to inform the public about the drill. Click here  to find out how!

Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared. The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophe for you, your organization, and your community.

Why is a "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" drill important? To respond quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.

Millions of people worldwide have participated in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills since 2008. The Great ShakeOut is held on the third Thursday of October each year. Everyone can participate! Individuals, families, businesses, schools, colleges, government agencies, and organizations are all invited to register.

As a registered ShakeOut Participant you will:

* Learn what you can do to get prepared

* Receive ShakeOut news and other earthquake information

* Be counted in the largest earthquake drill ever!

* Set an example that motivates others to participate

Here are a few suggestions for what businesses can do to participate in the ShakeOut. More instructions and resources can be found here.

* Have a "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" drill at 10:17 a.m. on October 17. You can also practice other aspects of your plan.

* Discuss what you learned and make improvements.

Get Prepared for Earthquakes:

* Check your emergency supplies and equipment; make sure they are accessible and functional.

* Ask departments to inspect facilities for items that might fall and cause injury and secure them.

* Encourage employees to prepare at home.

* Provide first aid and response training for staff.

Share the ShakeOut:

* Encourage employees to ask their friends, families and neighbors to register.

* Ask colleagues at other businesses to participate.

* Find posters, flyers, and other promotional materials here.
