The Eurocrisis and The Resiliency Architect
We've just added a phenomenal session to the DRI2013 lineup: "Building BCP: The Eurocrisis and The Resiliency Architect" presented by Patrick Morrissey of Auditware Consulting.

About the session: As business continuity professionals, our role is to assure that the business can operate "as is" no matter what.  It's our job to react to anything that could get in the way.  But as the Eurocrisis has demonstrated, it is also our job to lead our organizations away from risk, to think ahead, and to adopt a proactive approach. This new approach provides advice, counsels top management on how to reinforce organizational resilience, improve business processes, and take advantage of new technologies.   And our new role has aspects that range from advisory functions to strategic surveillance. The role of the resilience architect is in its infancy, attend this session to learn how it is developing in the context of the Eurocrisis.

Drive Header9
Issue #64
May 3, 2013

Greetings!

5-3 Drive BIRD pic Birdbrain.

In my house, that's a compliment, especially when the resident avian genius (pictured here) is the one calling you a "Birdbrain!"

Her name is Robirda.  She rules this roost.  Commands barking dogs to "Hush!"   Tells my teenage daughter "Go clean your room." Reminds my son twice a day "Go brush your teeth."  She often chimes in, especially when I'm talking to myself, which I was doing earlier this week.  I was puzzling about which articles to include in this week's Drive because I always have WAY more than I can fit.  And she looked at me and said, "What are you doing?!"

"Yeah," I thought. "What AM I doing?!"  And that's when it dawned on me that I don't have to choose. So instead of trying to shoehorn more information than will fit into a weekly e-newsletter, I'm inviting all of you to follow me on Twitter @buffyrojas.

I'm waiting on one last bit of info for an awesome DRI2013 panel session and instead of holding up Drive, I'll tweet it tomorrow.  I tried to get the handle Birdbrain, but it was taken.

Agnes Anyone?
5-3 Drive AGNES Pic
Remember this?  On June 19th, 1972, the first hurricane of the season, Agnes, crossed over the Florida Panhandle and headed back out to sea. By June 22nd, the remnants of Agnes stalled over the northeastern United States, dumping up to 22 inches of rain in some areas, including the Elmira/Corning region of New York. The devastating flooding resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in the region's history.

With the 41st anniversary of Agnes just around the corner and Sandy still fresh in our minds, now's a great time to watch "Agnes: The Flood of '72," an excellent and informative documentary that is viewable online right here.
Commercial Real Estate Industry Not Big On BCP
5-3 Drive OFFICE Pic
A study released yesterday shows that 57 percent of real estate owners and managers do not have business continuity plans.  The study, conducted by Travelers, also reported that an astounding 43 percent of real estate industry professionals surveyed did not consider natural disasters to be "an important business issue."

"The lack of preparation could be detrimental for real estate managers and owners," said Deb Denker, Real Estate Industry Manager, Travelers Commercial Accounts. "To survive the increasing number and severity of disasters, real estate owners and managers need a strategic business continuity plan to help minimize downtime, organize a response and deploy the resources needed for a prompt recovery."

New Jersey Oceanfront Bouncing Back
5-3 Drive SANDY HOOK Pic
Monday marked the six-month anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. The good news: New Jersey oceanfront park, Sandy Hook, is back! The Monmouth County, NJ park repoened yesterday.

"We're a work in progress," assistant park superintendent Pete McCarthy told the Star Ledger. "Considering that six months ago this road (Hartshorne Drive, the park's main road) was absolutely impassable for five days...we're in remarkably good shape."

The park, which draws more than 2 million visitors a year, opened at 5 a.m today, and is expected to draw twice as many visitors as usual. "I'm sure at 5 a.m. we will have a nice line of fishermen looking to get access here," McCarthy said.

"Flood waters of up to 6 feet submerged Sandy Hook's fire station, ranger station, theater and most of its six concession stands. Three of Sandy Hook's major parking lots were hidden beneath 3 to 4 feet of sand," McCarthy said. Read more about the recovery here
