Going Mobile: A Long, Strange Trip...to Work

Making sure employees have a place to work and can get there is a key element of continuity planning. And that was highlighted by two extraordinary news stories this week.
First was the New Jersey ER nurse who SWAM to work! Yes, you read it right, Marsha Hedgepeth swam for about 30 minutes before hitching a ride the rest of the way on a utility truck. The avid surfer was determined to get to the hospital, where she knew she'd be needed. Read all about it here.
Next up, a traffic stop in Germany revealed a makeshift office that would rival any mobile recovery unit. The car-based command center included a laptop with docking station, a router and wi-fi antenna tied to a cellular data stick, a printer, and a power inverter. Talk about a road warrior! |

| Issue #41 | November 23, 2012 |
Greetings!
Here in the U.S., yesterday was Thanksgiving...a day to gather with family, eat a ton of turkey and pumpkin pie, and hopefully take some time to reflect gratefully on our good fortune. I spent the day with my family, thankful for the time together...and especially grateful that my New Jersey-based crew made it through Hurricane Sandy relatively unscathed. But I was also thinking about all of you and about how thankful I am to be a part of your world and to know that you're out there keeping organizations all over the world up and running. Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not (and this being DRI International, many of you don't), know that I celebrate you! And it is my hope that -- as the understanding of who you are and what you do grows -- your job isn't thankless.

Security: A New (Nice!) View |
| |
Sometimes, security cameras catch something
totally different. |
Security cameras are used to keep us safe. Their intent is to catch the "bad guys" in the act, and sometimes their very presence is a deterrent to bad behavior. Footage from security cameras is most often reviewed when we're looking for evidence of something negative, but (small wonder!), these constant cameras also catch the good. Take a minute (1:36, exactly) to see the world a little differently. Then share this with your security team, and next time you walk by a security camera, wave! |

All You Need is Libraries?
|
In keeping with this week's good news theme, here's a story of continuity and kindness that made me smile. In the aftermath of Sandy, Queens Library sent a mobile book bus with a rapid response team of librarians as soon as roads were open. The library was doing just what it always does, providing information -- FEMA applications, locations for Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and other aid groups -- as well as cell phone charging, email access, and entertainment. Books were lent, even to those who didn't have library cards, and story time provided a welcome escape for little ones. Read more here.

Secret to Long-lasting Love a Lesson for All?
| |
With divorce rates hovering around 50 percent, an 80-year marriage is a continuity success story that just can't be ignored. This Sunday, John Betar and Ann Shawah celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary. The small business owners managed to keep a marriage, a family, and family business on track for longer than many of us are even alive.
Read the article for the secrets to their success, which I believe can be applied to what you do to. For example, John's advice includes these words of wisdom: "Get along. Compromise." Says Ann, "You know what your commitments are and you try to live by them and understand one another. If you don't hold a grudge, you can face anything."
