Let's Put The "I" in DRI!

It Stands for Ice Cream!

Hey there PA readers! I've heard from a bunch of you who live near me. And several of you have suggested getting together. That would be awesome! I was thinking dinner until I floated that idea by a local reader and fellow chocoholic who suggested skipping dinner and going for ice cream instead. Skip dinner and go straight for dessert? Brilliant! So, you are all invited. We'll pick a spot somewhere close by (Phoenixville, Malvern, King of Prussia, etc.) and DRI International will treat you to a treat! Sweet!

You're welcome to bring the family. My kids will be on hand. And let's have a little summer celebration. Send me an email if you're interested, and I'll plan a place, date, and time accordingly. And, yes, I'm buying...even if you want vanilla.

The survey is available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Japanese. It can be taken by clicking here. And be sure to do so by the August 15 deadline!

 PR Crisis Survey Results

Last week's one-question survey asked : How prepared is your organization to deal with a PR crisis? (Please rate on a scale of 1-10, 10 being most prepared).  Well, two percent of respondents rated themselves a 10 and another two percent said they were all the way at the other end of the scale, with a rating of one.

How did the majority of respondents fare?  Check the DRI International LinkedIn today for complete results and comments.

Issue #25August 3, 2012
Greetings!

I don't own a suit or heels. I favor hippie skirts and Birkenstocks. I also have a teenage daughter, Tierney. She is far more fashion conscious (and intelligent) than I. She aspires to have a Shoe Dazzle account and to be president. In fact, when she was about five years old, she asked me for a book about U.S. presidents. I got her one. She devoured it and then asked me for "the other one." I replied, "There is no other one. Those are all of the presidents." Astonished at my ignorance, I got a massive eye roll, and then this: "No, mom, I mean the book of lady presidents." Well, I explained that there hasn't yet been a "lady president," which garnered another massive eye roll and "Fine! Then, I'll do it!" She's been on a mission ever since.

With a lock on the presidency, Tierney's been spending more and more time lately shopping and trading clothes with her friends and being altogether too pretty for her own good...or mine. But last Friday, in an attempt to connect, I thought I'd show her my latest fashion acquisition, a killer, tie-dye hippie skirt for $10! I unveiled my purchase, got the all-too-familiar eye roll, and was asked, "Where did you get THAT?!" I proudly informed her that it came from the clearance rack at Marshall's. That's when I got her idea of feedback and constructive criticism: "Mom, okay, really, the reason why things are on the clearance rack is usually because they are hideous and should not be worn by anyone, ever."

So much for subtlety and diplomacy. She'll have to work on that...or not. Perhaps it's time for a no-holds-barred "lady" president. But I admit I was stinging a bit when I turned to my email and found far kinder feedback from many of you. For months now, I've been meaning to thank those of you who have taken the time to write or call me (I do try to respond to each and every call and email, but I fear that sometimes I might miss a few). You say nice things about Drive and tell me that you enjoy it and find it useful, and you give me wonderful suggestions (there are TWO of those in this issue) for articles. I appreciate your feedback and constructive criticism; so please keep it coming! You're far more diplomatic than my daughter.

An International BCM Glossary:

The Quest for a Common Lexicon

Big news! DRI International has begun work on a new, international BCM glossary.

"The project is being led by an all-volunteer group of industry leaders representing both private and public sectors" says DRI Director of Global Operations Chloe Demrovsky. " The goal is to reduce inconsistencies by endorsing a key definition of each term from the variety of sources available. Everything will be sourced to the standard, regulation, or knowledge body where it is cited."

Well, as someone who has covered this industry for almost 20 years, I say "Bravo!" And for those of you who may doubt the need for a common set of definitions, I offer the video link above. It's a clip from one of my favorite movies of all time (mock rockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap").

Noise will be made about this announcement, for sure. Let me know what you think. I'll share your comments, and I'll crank the volume on this discussion up to 11! If you didn't get the 11 reference, watch the video. If you did, and you're chuckling already, watch it again. It just never gets old.

Let's Get Ready:
A Pretty Cool Preparedness Pop Music Video

Jessie, a self-proclaimed "avid reader," says she uses weekly tidbits found in Drive to "engage conversations about business continuity and disaster recovery.  This is important," she says "because, I can do this without the 'doom and gloom' that is usually associated with newsletters and articles.  This newsletter is also helping me to achieve my goals in education and awareness for the organization!" Well, thanks Jessie!  That's exactly what I was hoping to do!

Jessie didn't just heap praise on Drive, she contributed to it as well.  Check out the video above and share it. Here's the back story: The American Public Health Association's (APHA) Get Ready team recently released its spoof of Carly Rae Jepsen's song "Call Me Maybe," all in the name of emergency preparedness.  Here are a couple of their clever verses:

We'll have water for all,
Cans of food in the hall
phone numbers on the wall,

so we know who to call

We'll meet up on the hill
Practice our escape drill
We'll make a plan, get a kit,

And we'll be on our way

Cute!  The music video stars 10 talented APHA staff members.  Perhaps, you and your team will be inspired to shoot a music video, and we can add a category to the annual DRI International Awards of Excellence!
