From the Principal
Dear Loma Portal Families,
What a great year! Thank you all for your active participation in our school community which helps all students thrive.
I am excited to let you know about some improvements coming our way in the next few months: a turf playing field, carpeting on the ramps to the portables, new lunch tables, and an improved site-wide public announcement system. Wow!
We wish our fabulous Molly Crabtree, Vanessa McFarland (teachers in room 27) and Eric Schindler (school counselor) well as they launch into retirement. We are grateful for Carol Buckenmeyer who left retirement to assist our music teacher vacancy this year. Mrs. Buckenmeyer is returning to her retirement to travel while teacher Candy Szalay will return to Loma Portal as our new music teacher in the fall. We will keep you posted as vacancies are filled.
Your child's class for next school year will be posted on site on August 29th at 4:00pm and left up during Labor Day weekend for your convenience.
The school office will be closed June 23rd through August 15th.
On behalf of our Whole Dolphin Team I want to wish you a Super Summer!
Fondly Principal Gerde

Thank You PLCPC!
On Saturday, May 31, 2014, over a dozen volunteers from Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church (PLCPC) volunteered at Loma Portal as part of PLCPC's 4th Annual Day of Service event. Volunteers helped move Principal Gerde into her new office, and move the conference room into its new space, as well as pick up trash and "lost and found" items across the campus from the Spring Fling the night before. This was just one of over 50 service projects performed by over 700 church and community volunteers throughout Point Loma, San Diego and Baja inspired by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer's vision of "One San Diego." |
Update Your Profile
It is that time of year when we start to look towards plans for next year. If you have students matriculating through the cluster you can eliminate or add any school to your eblast list. Please click the "Update Profile/Email Address" link at the bottom of this eblast. In addition most PLHS sports have their own eblast with info specific to their practices. This is important for fall sports especially as they will begin in August if not before. |

Now Accepting Registration for 2014-2015 School Year
Loma Portal Elementary is NOW ENROLLING new students, TK-grade 4. Please contact the office for registration information: 619-223-1683. |
Transitional Kindergarten at Loma Portal
Loma Portal's first Transitional Kindergarten class will be starting this Fall 2014-15 school year. Students who turn 5 between September 2nd and December 2nd are eligible. Other students who would normally be eligible for kindergarten are also eligible if you sign a waiver acknowledging that your child will be in a 2 year kindergarten program.
Transitional Kindergarten is the first of a two-year kindergarten program that uses age-appropriate curricula aligned to the California Common Core Standards. This class acts as a bridge between preschool and Kindergarten to support success in Kindergarten. TK students will attend a full year of TK and then move to Kindergarten the following year. The class will be taught by a certificated, experienced kindergarten teacher.
For more information or questions, please contact Jody Marshak, TK Teacher at 619-223-1683, or Principal Gerde.
If you are interested in having your child in our TK class, please phone or stop by the office to obtain the TK paperwork.
Please note the school district seeks a TK model where students are dismissed daily after a modified school day. Our modified school day dismisses at 1:10pm.
Klassic Kids enrollment for TK families is now open! This is a half day program, beginning at 1:10pm every day when students are dismissed from class. Please contact Ms. Candy Snell at kklomaportal@harmoniumsd.org with any questions. You can also stop by Klassic Kids at Loma Portal during the summer on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Thank you,
Principal Gerde |
