Where Art Meets Policy: Building a Healthy Coachella

In Coachella, ACTA is launching a project which will include a series of "house gatherings" at local trailer parks, convening residents to learn about local traditional cultural practices under the guidance of local resident artists, while at the same time using the convivial space to engage in dialogue surrounding the pressing policy issues. This project is a part of ACTA's work with The California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative.

Boyle Heights, Coachella, Merced, and Santa Ana Lift Up Their Cultural Treasures

Since 2011, ACTA has partnered with The California Endowment to identify, inventory, and activate cultural assets in four sites as part of the Endowment's Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative. Through a process that engaged local community members in identifying their communities' cultural treasures, ACTA compiled an amazing list of over 500 people, places, events, and more! ACTA's Roundtable Series Comes to Eureka and San Diego

As part of our new statewide Roundtable Series, ACTA presents two upcoming gatherings in Eureka (August 28) and San Diego (September 4, in partnership with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation). ACTA's Roundtable Series gives traditional and tradition-based artists and organizers the opportunity to meet one another, share art, and discuss how we can best learn from one another and think about the future.

ACTA presents California Son Jarocho in Washington DC

ACTA will curate a presentation for the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, of the son Jarocho form featuring past participants of our Apprenticeship Program. The invited artists include Luis Sarmiento and Ana Urzua from Santa Ana, Cesar Castro and Xochi Flores from Los Angeles, Artemio Posadas from San Jose, and Dolores Garcia from Oakland, all of whom are deeply integrated into this transnational cultural phenomenon. Former ACTA Apprenticeship Program Participant Featured in New York Times Video Who Speaks Wukchumni?

Marie Wilcox, the last living fluent speaker of the Native California Wukchumni language, and her daughter, Jennifer Malone, are featured in the New York Times op-ed video, Who Speaks Wukchumni?, published this week. Jennifer is a former ACTA Apprenticeship Program apprentice, with master artist Clara Charlie, as well as a former participant in ACTA's Development Program.
